Sorry for the double and being anonymous - Chrome giving problems again today.--- Bat571

You're right, bpj - but the Ms have to make sure they're getting THAT Hanley, and not an out-of-shape malcontent. My vote would be, if the Ms are going to do it, do it fast and now, so Acta & Co. can get to work ensuring we've got a guy that will help.
If Dombrowski really wants to be shot of him, though, I'd really like to see the Ms lever that into solving multiple problems as well. Maybe the guys going out need to be changed, but getting Hanley at a reasonable price while also getting other guys who can help might make the whole process worthwhile. And it seems to me leading off by including Trumbo in the swap and getting a high OBP, high character 1B prospect back is a start. And, of course, I still would like to see Ozuna in blue-and-teal!

Bp. Not a terrible trade idea, but those that are wary aren't going to be persuaded by Hanley's career numbers where the majority of that was accumulated from 2006-2010. The last few years speak more about what the player is now, and signs suggest he's no longer committed or able to play at his previous star levels. It's not clear what he is now, but he's probably not worth $10 mil plus good players. There are probably safer ways to make the upgrade. -didycel

It sounds to me like people are considering Hanley to be just some Kendrys Morales type bat. Seth Smith is Kendrys. Hanley is much closer to Nelson Cruz (only 4 yrs younger)

Seth Smith career:
OPS: .796
ISO: .189
wRC+: 112

Kendrys career:
OPS: .796
ISO: .190
wRC+: 115

Hanley career:
OPS: .861
ISO: 198
wRC+: 129

Cruz career:
OPS: .844
ISO: .237
wRC+: 124

I'll feel better about our position if we can sign three free agent relief pitchers. We've only got one so far.

If I were to do a splash trade, it would be for a front-end pitcher, rather than an aging, slow, un-athletic slugger coming off more injuries and with a bad record of inconsistency. But I don't think the Mariners are in the greatest place for making deals...anything we trade will be guys we kind of need...and then we're just trying to plug more holes. We don't have much surplus.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 3:05pm

I believe there is plenty of room in the budget for two ~$15mil players.

It should be a given that they'll go after a #2SP.

The question is if the best use of the remaining money should go towards a guy like Hanley or to a #3SP?

For my money, I'm letting Karns/Paxton/Walker/Elias battle for the 3-5 spots.

At this point I think Elias may be an overpay, but I think Jesus Montero+Mike Montgomery looks ok to the Red Sox if they're really wanting to dump Hanley and they're both out of options and not likely making the 25 man roster anyways..

I think a little more like Billy Beane when it comes to making trades. I try to get people that other clubs have no place for and that have high upside...We need outfielders who can play multiple positions well and get on base...I would actually wait until free agents are signing and then go after guys those free agents are supplanting. If the Cardinals sign Heyward, go after Randal Grichuk and/or John Jay. Now that the Red Sox have signed Chris Young, target Brock Holt. I don't think the Mariners should be trying to acquire big contracts right now...I think they should be trying to acquire guys that give them the flexibility that they need to sign free agent pitchers and still field a competitive team.

I'm interested in your trade ideas Matt?

(and yes, I know you had us getting Ozuna too...and Sam Travis...but, as I noted earlier, I wouldn't do Elias for Ozuna either and I think giving up that much near-ready talent along with Elias makes us less flexible and less likely to be able to sustain any success in the extended term.

Roenis Elias is worth considerably more to the Mariners than Hanley Ramirez. That entire deal is thus completely uninteresting to me.

IFF you could pull something like that off, using Dombrowski to get the RF that fits the Ms needs, using Acta to regenerate Hanley's interest level, getting Hanley back to his WBC fitness level, and using Cano and Cruz to keep him focused, that might be a decent idea. IFF ALL.

Meanwhile, James Clifford does the Montero-magic conditioning program with Hanley to get him ready for ST.

Then trade Montero + to the Orioles for Tyler Wilson to take Roenis' slot as #6/7 starter stashed in Tacoma, and give Patrick Kivlehan a chance to make the 25-man as the backup corner man.

Since he's owed $68M, and Trumbo is owed ~$9M, that should then be ~$30M coming the M's way. Manny Acta gets Hanley as a "project" to get him back to WBC-standard, using Cano and Cruz as wingmen. Hanley plays 1B and DH on an amplified/extended version of the Ozuna/Martin/Cruz rotation we've discussed, while Travis gets ready in Tacoma to take over when needed.

I think I'd be tempted to try something like this: Tell Dombrowski the Ms will take Hanley in a trade with the following provisions: the Red Sox will get Mark Trumbo, Roenis Elias, D.J. Peterson, Tyler Marlette, and Luis Liberato or Rayder Ascanio. The Red Sox go get Marcell Ozuna from the Marlins for whatever deal they can make from those players or the Red Sox farm, and then ship Ramirez, Sam Travis, Sandy #Leon, and Marcell Ozuna to the Ms along with #Money to make the net cost of Hanley = $10M/yr.

You can't call a player a "buy low" guy if he costs 15 million a year and is known to be a clubhouse cancer and terribly inconsistent. Seriously...look at his year to year fluctuations, his careless defensive play, his #History of dogging it on the field, his #History of making enemies in front offices, his total lack of interest in staying fit...

Reply - anonymous - 11/30/15 12:00pm

Disagree. I think anybody that could provide surplus value over their contract is a buy-low candidate.

If that's not how you'd define it, that's fine. I just don't buy it.

The dollars involved make it not cheap. It would be a gamble. So would giving 4 years $60 million to Zobrist.. Or Cruz...

Cruz was a risk. A potential albatross. It's worked out ok so far... Ramirez is, what, 4 years younger? Cruz has an .843 career OPS... Ramirez, .861...

the tear is why they put the "lost season" clause in his contract.

Kendrys Morales only got a couple years, but he also only has a .795 career OPS to Ramirez's .861.

There's a #Whale of a difference between Kendrys and Hanley talent-wise.

8 career WAR for Kendrys compared to 38 for Hanley.

They've known about the tear since he signed his extension before the 2013 season, it's not anything new.

My guess is that Felix doesn't feel anywhere near enough pain to want to stop pitching, and the Mariners respected his wishes.

Interesting Van Slyke comment on Felix.I wouldn't be surprised if partial tears exist all over the MLB. Would be interesting to know if Felix is really one of them and, if so, why he wasn't shut down early last year.

bp, Manny R. ran 155 0PS+ numbers out there like clockwork. He hit .300+ like clockwork OBP was .400+, like clockwork. Go back to 2009 and you find a Hanley R. that was close to that player for a full season. He's $90M of 1B headache...or DH.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 9:42am

They can move Cruz to 1B if they want. Doesn't mean there's not still room at DH for Hanley.

Personally, I think the idea of moving Cruz to 1B when he hasn't played infield is a much worse option than Hanley at 1B, but to each his own.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 9:46am

Also, $90M??

On the high end, the M's would be into Hanley at 3/$45...

Good luck signing any free agent who is 31 years old with a career .861 OPS to even DH for that.

Right. Hanley is the kind of risk this team cannot afford. He's not going to be a super utility player as suggested without poisoning the clubhouse. He's that guy. He can't play the OF. He can't play the IF, aside from maybe 1B. If Jack was still in charge he probably wouldn't have problems adding another 1B/DH to the mix but DiPoto kind of hates that template. I'm warming to the idea of Cruz at 1B, assuming they can land a competent RF.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 9:48am

I don't think he has that attitude with Cano and Cruz around. I could be wrong. Either way, his personality is not a deterrent to me.

This excellent website truly has all the info I wanted about this subject and didn't know who to ask.

The other problem with acquiring Ramirez is that you're basically stuck with him at 1B or DH and that makes it more difficult to move Cano off of 2B for a defensive upgrade in the next few years. Something the Mariners have said that they want to do eventually.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 9:37am

Yes, that's exactly why I would acquire him.

But, as we concluded here not all that long ago (when I suggested the best move would be Cano to 1B), they're not going to do it now and probably not in the next couple of years.

Having Hanley on the roster gives the M's three years before they move Cano. I think that window is right.

Otherwise, Trumbo leaves after 2016, they'll have a gaping hole and their hand may be forced at that time to move Cano

If Hanley can't hit in Fenway...he can't hit in #Seattle. The second half swoon should be a major point of concern, especially for a player known for being entitled, lazy, and inconsistent. He had multiple horrendous seasons in a row for the Marlins.

Reply - bpj23 - 11/30/15 9:33am

Can't hit in Fenway.. He was leading the league with Davis and Cruz in homeruns early in the year.

He got injured and production fell off. It absolutely should be a concern. But that's why he's available. He's a perfect buy low guy.

The VanSlyke interview just keeps on giving: “There’s a guy up in #Seattle who has a torn elbow — it’s about 25% torn and has been for the last couple of years — but he keeps pitching,” Van Slyke said while accurately discussing the fickle nature of pitcher injuries. “Who’s that?” Cusumano asked. “Hernandez…. Felix Hernandez,” Van Slyke answered.
