Re: the Seahawks using up all their luck in 2013-14 .. .couldn't agree more. Lot more luck in pro sports than fans *want* to believe. The Seahawks been in 9 street fights, and no way they're a sub-.500 team. Sometimes it just don' work out. The 80's 49ers won 4 titles in a decade, not 4 in 4 years.

Oh, and DiPoto said in the article that he did not envision Martin batting at the top of the order, rather in the bottom third. Given his speed that almost HAS to translate into batting ninth.

It's clear from DiPoto's statements regarding today's trade that he has really like Martin for a while, so when the opportunity presented itself to get him in a "buy low" situation he jumped at it. My liking of the trade is contingent, if I may indulge myself in this tautology, on DiPoto being right. In the article I read he talked to and relied heavily on Bolgar, the new bench coach and Nelson Cruz, both of whom knew him from their time in #Texas. If DiPoto misses on trades like this, he will go the way of Bavasi and Zduriencik. At this point, we just have to hope that's not the case.

To build on G #Money, it's understandable for any GM not wanting to be tied to the last guy's players. (See Jack Z.)
But let's hope that this does NOT apply to Kuma.
Without him, things turn too much to the negative. Bullpen adds won't fix that problem.

Remember what I said about the next GM standing on the shoulders of Jack's prospects to do what he couldn't? DiPoto is wasting no time using the capital left to him to remake the team to his liking. Let's hope he's keeping the right guys and adding around them. Not as big a fan of the second deal.

to 2016 success.

If Mather sees a window based on Cano, Cruz and Felix, he's gotta know that the spending has to front-load a bit to fix the BP without relying on guys with minimal track records (e.g., Zych) who, if they pan out, could be bonuses, but shouldn't be the key to success.

If DiPoto really has the credit card to fix the team for 2016, then spending on the BP has to be in the plan at some higher-than-nominal level. The amount allocated may fall as he fixes the Farm, but he and Mather gotta know that short-term BP fixes will require high-grade pasta in the spaghetti.

Oh is a true FA and doesn't need to be posted. Flight time from #Korea to #Seattle is considerably shorter than to any other US city, so he might be more reasonable than it might seem.

still...could be a bit spendy...depending on who gets the state-side ace relievers available in trade.

correction...I'm an idiot...Oh is FA, not posted...that helps...wow...why did I think he was posted?

I don't think we can afford even three of those guys, anon. Lowe is almost a no-brainer given his connection with the org, and Sipp is the minimum I'd want for my true 8th inning lefty. But Oh will probably cost like 10 mil in post and a multi-year deal, Sipp is a big enough name now to get 3-4 mil minimum, and Lowe should get a couple mil...how much will we be allowed to spend on relievers?

Lowe, Oh, Aardsma, and Sipp and the BP will be more than fixed; heck, even three of those. Fister for the rotation and Ianetta teamed with Zunino, Bring on 2016

There now has to be at least TWO more reliever acquisitions. Bass is not a guy I want to count on. Bartender was. So...yeah...still need a true closer and at least one other power arm. Count me as among the detractors on this deal.

Paul Blair was a 2.0 dWAR guy, maybe a bit above, on average. Martin is almost Motormouth. Much to like there.

Lots to like in Martin, especially his +2 dWAR glove/range. A word of caution, however, he's a candidate for platooning. His career OPS vR is .703 (.573 last year) but is only .582 vL. That is dismal dismal-ness. If Guti could cover CF again you would have a terrific marriage. A 2nd word of caution: He's a career .695 hitter in #Texas (who isn't) but only .635 outside of #Texas. Sigh. Bass isn't Bartender, btw. If you're supposed to get the best player in the trade we might have. If martin gets in the .690 OPS range then he's a steal. If he's in the .590 range, then we're not going to be loving him. The funny thing is that this is the year that he gets decently expensive. He's not a long term investment, if he crashes, I suppose. And RP's are indeed RP's, fairly expendable. But DiPoto is bold. I like that. My jury is still out on Martin. diderot is right, he hits 9th. DiPoto indicated there may be another OF move coming, too.

Martin deal is pretty much contextual, isn't it?
Defense is great across the board.
If you're happy with him hitting ninth, this is wonderful.
If you're looking at him to lead off, I think people could be very disappointed.

I like the trade for Martin. I'm banking on the fact that DiPoto believes that his 2015 injuries will prove to be a temporary interruption in his career arc. Suddenly we have a top tier defensive CF...and one with a plus ARM too! That combination in center is a major plus in run prevention in my #Book. Currently in MLB there's a lot of CF'ers who can go get the ball pretty well, but most have average or below average arms. Not many of them can shut down the taking of extra bases as well. Don't remember anything about Bass. I wonder if the PTBNL is conditional depending on Martin's performance or playing-time. Makes sense after an injury season.

Dipoto must of read my shout from a few days ago! #Mariners land CF Leonys Martin and RHP Anthony Bass in exchange for RHP Tom Wilhelmsen ,OF James Jones and a PTBNL. That's another solid deal for DiPoto, not too worried about the PTBNL.

OK, will try again (and then the first will likely come up): Ah-seop Son is being posted by the Lotte Giants in Korea: Here he is https://www.youtube..... Lefty bat RF with a classic inside the ball stroke, walks a ton, but can turn on the ball and rip it over the fence (a bit like Ichiro) and has a VG glove. I would be in on this guy. BTW: Freddie Freeman is up for offer by the Braves. If you're moderating, you can dump my previous (non-logged in post).

Part 1 - Re: UW Hoops. I could jot down a few opinions here :) Freshman class is mostly likely not on par with Webber/Rose/Howard but a Top 10 class nationally. A really athletic group of players, don't think Romar has had a better collection of athletic talent. Many of the players already have plenty of skill, not going to be waiting 3 years for them to turn in to #Basketball players. They most hyped of the group is Rainier Beach grad Dejounte Murray. He and Jamal Crawford are like big/little brother. Murray has been mentored for years by several of the best #Seattle Pro players of the past decade. Dejounte is a triple-double waiting to happen any night, and he stayed home to put UW back on the college #Basketball map.

My pick for most exciting talent and best NBA player of the bunch is Marquese Chriss. Goes about 6'8" or 6'9" and man does he have explosive actions! Easily jumps into passing lanes for steals, very quick leaping ability for blocks, dunks, rebounds. Absolutely an NBA athlete. Jumper and free throws look pretty smooth too.

A few other local players excited to be at UW are David Crisp (Rainier Beach), Matisse Thybulle (Eastside Catholic) and Dominic Green (Hazen). I've seen lots of video of Crisp. Reminds of a Will Conroy / Isaiah Thomas type. Strong, stocky build but still explosive with a good looking jumper. Speaking of Will Conroy, he is back for his first shot as an assistant coach! Have not seen enough of Thybulle or Green to give an opinion but Thybulle has a reputation as the best athlete on the team while Green is billed as instant offense, not shy about getting his shot off.

Part 2 - Malik Dime is not a freshman, but is new to the team as a Jr. transfer and he was a monster on the glass in the first game with 14 or 15 boards and 3 blocks I think? Looks like mostly dunks, boards and blocks from him at this point but we need those contributions. A couple other new out of state frontcourt players are Noah Dickerson and Devenir Duruisseau both are around 6'8" but solidly built for freshmen. Dickerson looks pretty skilled and crafty near the basket for a fairly broad body while Duruisseau seems like a hard working glue guy that's always in the right place. His skills don't jump out as much as most of the other players but he seems to have the right attitude to maximize his talent.

A couple days back Markelle Fultz signed his letter of intent to play for UW starting 2016. He's currently the #6 player in the nation for 2016, pretty much the highest ranked guy Romar has pulled in. Not from #Seattle either. Dematha Catholic in #Maryland.

Coach Romar also has a 2018 verbal from 5 star Jontay Porter, who could also be a Top 10 in class guy when 2018 rolls around. Reminds me very much of a young Sam Perkins right down to the lefty kinda low release slingy 3 ball.

Overall the play that first game in #China was very sloppy, but the effort level on defense was quite high. Many attempted charging calls on D so they are listening to what Coach Romar wants and tried to get it done, instead ended up with some blocking fouls. An exciting #Style of play to be a fan of win or lose this season!

I hate to say it but Wilson really looks like he has regressed this year. Or maybe we just used up all of our luck the last two years. Coming off of a bye we should have expected a better performance.

I want Oh / Stone Buddha. Start with Benoit or Wilhelmsen as an alternate until his feet are wet, then let him go. His record in #Japan tells me there might be quite something in store.

Yeah, Doc...I'm rooting for us to go get a hoss like Aroldis Chapman or Andrew Miller and leave us in position to own the universe.

Also re: Benoit ... feeling from rival GM's is supposedly that DiPoto won't commit to Benoit as closer because he wants to bring in a better reliever next time ... t'would be nice, no?

We were noodling in the QED thread about how pitching staffs can be outliers, compared to hitting lineups. Here is St. Louis 2015 b-ref page. http://www.baseball-... . Amazing. Adam Wainwright, if he'd been healthy, might well have taken their 135 ERA+ downward.
