Yesterday we discussed how the Seattle Storm is currently culling players while the team proceeds with spring training before the season begins next month, as all of the WNBA teams are doing right now. This week we saw Nneka Enemkpali leave the Storm and put on waivers. Now the Storm has announced that Davellyn Whyte, too, has been released to waivers. Whyte, a guard, was the 16th overall selection in the 2013 WNBA Draft, picked by the San Antonio Stars and playing for the team for two years before sitting out for a year to recover from an injury.

Whyte played for the Arizona Wildcats where she was the team’s second lead scorer in history with 2,059 total points scored. She was the number one player in the team history for starting in the game, with a total of 126 starts. Accordingly she was also played the most minutes out of any player in the team history with a total of 4,243 minutes. The Wildcats were proud to boast that Whyte was their top WNBA draft selection in their history.

Some of Whyte’s most inspiring achievements include being a four-time All-Pac-12 from coaches and a three-time All-Pac-12 from the media, the 2012 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention, the 2010 All-Pac-10 Freshman Team, 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and 2012 Second-Team Freshman All-America. Not every player can say that they’ve started in every game they’ve been in, either. The press said that she had one of the most impressive Freshman years in the history of sports in Arizona, making her one of the most talented athletes available during the 2013 Draft. She has a long string of accomplishments running behind her, from records during every year of school to near-records.

Born in Mesa, Arizona, Whyte grew up in sports with a father who coaches for the Chicago White Sox. Some fun facts about her include her dream to meet President Obama and the fact that she wakes up at 6:00 AM to watch cartoons. She has previously stated that she would enjoy working as an athletic trainer following her WNBA career, so hopefully she will be able to jumpstart that career soon if she is not selected by another team while she is on waivers.
