Spring Numbers

Browsing some spring numbers without reading too much into them:

One of the regulars put up this line:

45 AB, 13 H, 4 2b, 1 HR, 6 BB, 4 K, .289/.385/.444/.829

That was completely under the radar to me.  It was Jack Wilson

Looks like he had a very similar line in 2007, but not since.  Obviously, any offensive help from him would be much appreciated.

The other cool line:

51 AB, 15 H, 5 2b, 6 BB, 9 K, .314/.386/.412/.798 -- Adam Moore

Scanning H, XBH, BB and K:

Sweeney had 20 hits and 9 XBH in 40 AB, but 0 BB/8 K (guess you don't need to walk if you're smoking everything for XBH)

Figgins had 15 H and 16 BB (vs. 10 K) in 59 AB for a .254/.421/.390 line.  Does make you wonder about Sports Illustrated's comment that the walks would be better in front of Ichiro instead of behind him.  But good luck getting Ichiro to move.

Lopez had 3 BB vs. 6 K in 67 AB.  Looks a lot like his career pace, not the guy who had the goal of 50 BB.  But talking and changing are different things.

Tui and Guti both got 56 ABs and put up roughly similar lines:

  • Tui: 18 H, 8 XBH, 4 BB, 12 K, .321/.367/.607
  • Guti: 15 H, 6 XBH, 6 BB, 12 K, .268/.333/.500

Most of the buzz seems to be that Tui will go to AAA when Hannahan comes back.

Hannahan will become a distant memory, and an answer to one trivia question, when tuI takes off like a cruise missle in search of Osama bin Laden.

I noticed Jack's spring too.  I found it somewhat comforting, because his past leaves me with exactly zero confidence that he'll do anything worthwhile with the bat.  My hope is that with a good clubhouse, a stable situation, lots of defensive love, and freedom from 9 years of Pirate oppression, he has a 100 OPS+ type of year.  That's the upside, it would seem to me.  Just having him not be bad would be good.  : )  As Doc has mentioned, if the M's can just avoid the black holes in the lineup, then they should be okee-dokee.
I hope Tui gets playing time, and doesn't collect dust on the bench.  That was disappointing to see last year.
