RICK, VIN SCULLY, AND KEVIN COSTNER
An Old Friend Shares His Excitement

Thought I would share with this community a FB post I put up early this afternoon.

***

Just had a terrific hour-long conversation with Rick, an old friend and roommate from my Southern California days. He was my best man when Gail and I were married in 1982. Explaining what triggered him to call me is a bit convoluted but interesting.

He and his older brother were born, raised, and went to high school in Visalia, California. One of his brother's friends at high school was someone who would go on to become one of the premier actors of his generation, Kevin Costner. Over the years Rick has talked on the phone with Kevin several times, and he has nothing but good things to say about him.

Anyway, both Rick and I were huge LA Dodgers fans back in late '70's and early '80's. I grew up listening to Dodgers announcer Vin Scully on radio and TV broadcasts, and though Rick was originally from north-central California, once he moved south and was my roommate we would listen to Scully call Dodgers games on the radio.

Fast forward to today.

Vin Scully is finally retiring after 67 (that's right, SIXTY-SEVEN!) years as a Hall of Fame broadcaster, and the team has set aside this weekend to honor Vinny for his many years of service. Tonight at Dodger Stadium there will be a special ceremony for him before the game. Among the special speakers are Bob Costas, and the mayor of Los Angeles, and the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, and Dodgers Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax...and...Kevin Costner, who was the star of two famous baseball movies, "Field Of Dreams" and "Bull Durham." He also starred in two well-known Westerns, "Silverado" and "Dances With Wolves," as well as many more prominent films. .

Rick hears about Costner's involvement today. He has Kevin's phone number, so on a lark he calls him, and gets through. Costner tells him he's in his back yard right now working on the speech, which he feels very honored to give. They talk for a few minutes.

When the call is over, Rick is so excited at his connection to this major Southern California event that he starts to think about who he can call that would share his excitement. And among a few others, he thinks of...me. So we talk for an hour (it's probably been three or four years since we last talked) about various things, old times, current times, getting older, retirement plans. Just stuff. We talked just like we did nearly 40 years ago as roommates.

It is wonderful to have such friends. I cannot emphasize enough the value of friendships that span long distances and many years. Those kinds of friendships require personal investment, but their cost is repaid many times over. I am thankful to Rick for being such a friend, and to the Lord for bringing him into my life so long ago.

A bit of a tangible connection to a great, great event, the celebration of Vin Scully's career.  It must have been an important part of the fabric of your life, Scully's voice in combination with the legendary Dodgers teams of your youth.

I can still visualize a few scenes of my life when I was 14 or 15, and Neihaus' voice was on the radio with the expansion Mariners new in town ... can visualize the surroundings, the feelings, etc. as we took summer vacation from school on a lazy day and Neihaus described Enrique Romo's mannerisms on the mound.

I'd enjoy hearing it if you cared to relate a few such memories of your earlier life as a Dodgers fan.

....

Not too long ago I found a channel with Nicholson and Freeman in The Bucket List, which meant something completely different nowadays from what it meant originally.  Seen that movie lately?  :- )

Never seen The Bucket List, deprived citizen that I am! But if you say it's worth watching, I'll try to get with it.

Re: Early Dodgers memories, I'll try to get to that perhaps this weekend, more likely next week.

Thanks, Doc. Hope you're feeling better.

1) Great story!  I have two high school baseball teammates I reconnected with about 15 years ago. We now email and message virtually eveyr day, and travel together, both with and without wives.  One of the happiest occurrences of my life.

2) Amazing that the reclusive Koufax will speak. That maybe says more about Scully than all of the words at the event put together.

3) I'm a minority of one...but my favoirite Costner baseball movie is For the Love of the Game.

Very neat, Daddy!  Those kind of friends are the coolest!

A month ago or so I received a text from a college buddy I hadn't seen in 35 years (since another college buddy's wedding).

He got my number because he was standing in line in a San Diego (where he lives) Starbucks with a guy and they started talking about the U of O and the fact the Ducks won the NCAA championship this year.  The other guy was a good friend of mine who lived next to me (a few years older) when I was a kid. A former U of O golfer.  Conversation came around to where they were respectfully from and ended up with my college buddy getting my phone number.

It was cool to touch base.

Moe, diderot, isn't it amazing (a) how these connections are made, and (b) how cool it is when old friendships are rekindled?

Wow - the Dodgers sent him off in style for his final home game. (He's indicated that he will not call any playoff games.). They win the game and clinch the division with an extra-innings, walk off home run. Then he addresses the crowd and even seranades them with a song. Spectacular.
