Player of the Day: Troy Perkins

He is a goalkeeper for the Seattle Sounders. He also wears the #1 uniform, which has to be cool. Troy Perkins was born on July 29, 1981 in Springfield, Ohio. He weighs 190 pounds and stands at 6’2.

Perkins grew up in Worthington, Ohio. During his youth career, Perkins played for the South Florida Bulls from 2000 to 2002. Then in 2003 he was a part of the Evansville Purple Aces. His senior career started in 2002 with the Cape Cod Crusaders, making 22 appearances. From there, he went on to play for DC United from 2004 to 2007. During those years, he made 77 appearances.

He remained for the team until 2007, going on loan to the Northern Virginia Royals in 2004 where he appeared twice. From 2008 to 2010, he played for Valerenga, appearing 53 times. In 2010, he played for DC United in 22 appearances, but went to play for the Portland Timbers from 2011 to 2012. He made 51 appearances with the team. In 2012, he joined the Montreal Impact, appearing 63 times and remaining with the team until 2014. In 2015, he came to play for the Sounders in Seattle, signing on to the team on January 13, 2015. He appeared four times and went on loan to the Seattle Sounders FC 2 team for one appearance during that time. He has also played internationally for the U.S. team, appearing seven times from 2009 to 2010. In his first game against Sweden, the U.S. Men’s National Team won 3-2.

In his career, Perkins has played in a total of 217 games, starting in nearly all of them—216. He has played for 19,463 minutes during the regular season, with 75 wins and 87 losses. He’s had 54 ties over the years.

Perkins says he has a lot to prove on the team. He says he is ready to fill in any time Stefan Frei can’t fulfill his duties as goalkeeper. Perkins says that the Sounders helped him out and gave him another shot as a veteran player, and that he wants to show the team that they made a good choice when they selected him.

In addition to playing soccer, Perkins is an accomplished cook. He enjoys preparing many different kinds of foods but especially dishes from South America. His parents’ names are Steven and Debra, and his wife’s name is Elizabeth. The two have two children.
