State of the Nfl
Two things that popped out about Goodell's speech

On Friday, NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell gave his end of the year address.

Goodell spoke on the usual ongoing concussion issues, player discipline, the upcoming Superbowl, and of course the ever so popular competition commitee.

It seems more and more each year the NFL does some pretty significant changes competition wise. This is getting more and more attention each year it seems.

In Goodell's speech, two things in particular popped out. One being the state of the league's yearly all star Pro Bowl game played last Sunday. The second being a possible, or should I say probable, rule change involving player ejections.

First, in regards to the Pro Bowl Goodall made it clear he was unhappy with the competition in the game. This really is nothing new, but it will not change. The players are not trying to kill themselves or end their careers in the game that means nothing. You can not put the game in the middle of the season, like other sports, to drive competition with playoff implications either.... due to this same reason of injury.

Many good things have been done with the Pro Bowl in recent years. The draft format by NFL Legends Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice has kept things fun. Having the game the week before the Superbowl also has been very nice, as it has avoided having an entire two week wait with no football.

More than anything the league needs a nice skill competition mixed in with the boring game. Years ago they would have the NFL QB Challenge, which pitted QB vs. QB in many skills from speed, to accuracy, to arm strength. The same could be done at any position and would really have people tuning in.

It may be hard to achieve anything with the Pro Bowl game as ratings are still better than that of hit TV shows...but at least Rodge is acting like he cares...

Lastly, Goodell's comments on adding an ejection for two personal really echoed loudly.

There's not much doubt he will make it happen, and maybe he should after the OBJ debockle, but it  seems like a slippery slope. It would put much on the refs. This along with current personal fouls should be automatically challenged as well, or be able to be challenged by coaches. Often times guys accidently commit these fouls, or the offensive player creates the foul in anticipation of hits. Other times they are called on what appear to be perfectly legal hits.

Either way what the great and powerful Rodger wants he probably will get. Time will tell as the league continues to make significant shifts from season to season anymore.
