Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for June 30
Hot times in the desert [for real] ... Names to drill into your skull: Elias, Taylor, Smith, Diaz ... etc.

Results of the "Future Finalists" vote when we get them.

AAA -- Las Vegas 4, Tacoma 1  -- Box

With all the low-hanging fruit stripped from the Rainier tree, it's up to hold-over stalwarts like Nate Tenbrink (26intheMix) and Rich Poythress (26intheMix) to hold down the offensive fort.

Mixed metaphor alert!

Both had a pair of hits Sunday, but Tacoma produced not a single extra-base hit (is that an oxymoron -- "single extra-base hit"?).

In other words, Brandon Maurer (Talk40 #9) had no offensive support, and he had a wobbly outing anyway: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

AA -- Jackson 5, Birmingham 3  -- Box

He falls through the cracks (and I admit I've been one of those creating the "cracks") of the MLB-ready crew at Tacoma and the "Next-Next" crew of teen types, but don't lose track of Cuban righty Roenis Elias (26intheMix).

Sunday: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

On the year: 15 GS | 2.96 ERA | 1.18 WHIP | 0.7 HR/9 | 3.4 BB/9 | 7.4 K/9

And the final 1.2 IP brought more awesomeness from The Carson Show -- another three strikeouts from Carson Smith (Talk40 #13).  That's 36 K and 8 BB in 25.2 IP (2.8 BB/9 | 12.6 K/9).

On offense, our new Mariners Prospect Talk icon Chris Taylor (Talk40 #28) had a single, a double and a stolen base.

Doc didn't notice Brad Miller's 23 steals last year?  Taylor has 23 steals already; and it's just the end of June.  And ... 100 hits, 20 doubles, 8 triples, 7 HR, 49 walks.  He's on that Seager-Miller track, too.

Can we fit him into our '70s Dodgers infield or is the dance card already filled?  Is that another mixed metaphor?

High-A -- Modesto 16, High Desert 13 -- Box

107 degrees!

One.  Hundred.  Seven.

Attendance: 409.  [Maybe there are 409 seats in the shade.]

That's info from the box score.

29 runs.  That's also from the box score.

I suppose Daniel Paolini (Talk40 #26) had to conjure up images of the baseball field at Siena College:

[If you're just joining us, I enjoy poking fun of the fact that if you google images of "Siena College baseball" you get a picture of a modern art sculpture in the snow with an outfield fence in the background.  Not really the best recruiting tool.]

Anyway, the desert was a long way from that, but Paolini adjusted: HR, single, 2 BB.

And good news for the Kivle-fans: the first High Desert dinger for Patrick Kivlehan (Talk40 #33).

Low-A -- Quad Cities 4, Clinton 1 -- Box

What's Your Vector, Victor?  Veering a bit off course, but not too bad for Victor Sanchez (Talk40 #12):  4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.

Jabari Henry (26intheMix) got his 16th double.

Short Season-A -- Spokane 10, Everett 9 -- Box

Phillips Castillo (Talk40 #38) was the offensive hero as the Aqua Sox came up just short in a see-saw affair.

Castillo had a homer and two singles for four RBI.

Also getting three hits was Justin Seager.  He has 14 hits already (.368/.415/.474).

And oh-by-the-way he was playing third base.  Imagine a Seager playing third.  (D.J. Peterson had the day off; Austin WIlson had a double in five trips.)

Rookie -- Bristol 6, Pulaski 2 -- Box

We love the "new" Edwin Diaz (Talk40 #36): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

Three starts: yet to yield an earned run, 20 strikeouts, 2 walks.

Ian Miller had a single and a double.

AZL Rookie -- Mariners 12, A's 0 -- Box

And in Arizona.  113 degrees.

One. Hundred. Thirteen.

Attendance: yeah, right

But the youthful M's put a sweaty hurt on the youthful A's in the Peoria oven.

The Tank didn't mind: Tyler O'Neill went 3-for-4 with a double.  And Chantz Mack had two doubles and a walk.

Looking Ahead

Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) is set for Tacoma.  Luiz Gohara (Talk40 #21) gets his third turn for Pulaski.

"This is my first time playing in front of a decent amount of people," DeCarlo said. "I'm just enjoying it."
So... yeah right, indeed.  Not a lot of attendance in AZ in the sweltering heat.  DeCarlo needs to figure out how he's striking out in half his plate appearances and knock that off, though.  He didn't do that last year in a similar rookie league.  Calm down, Joe, and put the bat on the ball.  Love ya buddy.
Loving the work we're doing with Diaz, though.  Whoever has worked with Diaz and Walker need lifetime gigs with us.  That's great work right there, taking high velo arms and turning them into pitchers.  Starting pitchers, mind you, not just bullpen arms.
Diaz could blow by a significant number of pitchers in our system in the rankings if he keeps this up.  I had him as a very risky but significant upside bet.  His risk is dropping by the start.

PS - never stop showing the awesome statue that reps Sienna baseball.  Especially if Paolini ever makes the bigs.

Maybe there is room for Chris Taylor in the M's (Dodgers" infield. How does Kyle Seager, 1B, sound? Garvey came up a 3B dude.
I-N-T-R-I-G-U-I-N-G!
Speed, defense and 35 doubles from every IF position, plus Seagers 20+ taters.
You would need some DH pop and a 25+ HR RF. But you could do it. Remember those early Herzog teams in St. Louie?
Keith Hernandez at 1B, Tommy Herr at 2B, Ozzie at SS and Oberkfell at 3B? The M's infield could look something like that.
It could work. Really.

I've sat in that stadium several times. There are large awning set up to shade most of the seating, but a game at 3:00, only the back few rows are shaded, and even then the shade will often be of the mid 90s variety. And I work in Victorville, the neighboring city, and had people tell me several times that their car thermometers read in the 114-118 degree range.

I've bought a ton of Edwin Diaz rookie cards. On the back it says he touches 97 and compares him to a young Pedro Martinez. Wouldn't that be nice if he turns out half as good! What all does he throw G, do you know? Just FB and Curve?
