Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for July 31
Choi Joy & Goon Goodness ... but Broussard keeps Mariner-dom singing the blues ... etc.

AAA -- Omaha 8, Tacoma 0  -- Box

Despite the fact that most of the glamour Royals prospects have moved on (not unlike Tacoma), Omaha has been the hottest team in the Pacific Coast League, going 10-3 since July 20.

And (ugh) He For Whom We Coughed Up Shin-Soo Choo Ben Broussard has been a big part of it.

After a bit of research, it turns out that Broussard just returned to baseball this year after spending a few years as a full-time musician.

No word on whether he ever played in a place where Tom Wilhelmsen was tending bar.

In case you haven't noticed, there's not much Rainier news to report (Stephen Pryor: 0.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER).

AA -- Jackson 7, Huntsville 3  -- Box

Our man Ji-Man Choi (Talk40 #19) was spreading Choi Joy! all over the place: double, home run, two walks.

The dude hits everywhere he goes.  Did you know that in his first four pro games, as a 19-year-old just over from Korea, he went 10-for-15?  And he hasn't stopped: .308/.403/.578 with 52 XBH, 49 BB and just 55 K.

And two more strikeouts for the captain of the Goon Squad!  Tyler Burgoon (26intheMix) now has 63 in 45.1 IP.

High-A -- Stockton 6, High Desert 4 -- Box

Home runs for Steven Proscia (26intheMix) and Kevin Rivers, but the Mavericks were in too deep of a hole.

Low-A -- Beloit 5, Clinton 2 -- Box

A clinker from Tyler Pike (Talk40 #14): 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K.

Ketel Marte (26intheMix) has 91 hits, 77 of them singles.  But you take what you can get.

D.J. Peterson had a double in four trips.

Short Season-A -- Everett 7, Boise 4 -- Box

Kyle Petty skipped Pulaski, so he never got the chance to play in Bristol.  Folks would have loved that.  Maybe he would have tried to spin someone out while running the bases.  Yes, I promised to send the NASCAR gags back into the garage, didn't I?

Petty had his first Aqua Sox homer to help Everett.

Rookie -- Pulaski 5, Bristol 4 -- Box

Pulaski actually was playing Bristol, and won on the last lap in the last inning with key hits from Tyler Smith and Isaiah Yates (Talk40 #39).  Smith had two doubles on the night.

AZL Rookie -- Rangers 5, Mariners 3 -- Box

The youthful Rangers held the youthful M's without an extra-base hit.

Looking Ahead

James Paxton (Talk40 #3) looks to keep his hot streak going for Tacoma, and perhaps make Broussard want to go back to music while he's at it.

Here is the vid of Ji-Man's homer last night, turns out it was a Grand Slam!  The Generals play by play man even uses Dave Niehaus'grand slami call!  Choi is a little wider and squatier than I was envisioning / remembering...
Here is another video, this time of Ji-Man Tripling with the bases loaded...  With how poorly some of our M's do with guys on base / clutch hitting (I am looking at YOU Smoak and Ackley) I really like seeing some of these young guys with big hits to score runs!
