Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 21
A freaky game in the desert ... low-scoring double-header for Jackson ... etc.

Interestingly, the replacement for Julio Morban (Talk40 #15) (broken leg) is Chantz Mack, jumping all the way up from Everett.  The 2013 draftee was taken in the 29th round out of Miami.  He's hit .308/.401/.418 so far.  Maybe they didn't want to mess with the High Desert and Clinton lineups for the rest of the season?  I would have been curious to see Jabari Henry (26intheMix) maybe?

AAA -- Tucson 5, Tacoma 3  -- Box

Blake Beavan gave up 11 hits and five earned runs in 5.0 IP, so you kind of know where this one was going.

Franklin Gutierrez (that guy's still around?) had a double.

AA -- Mobile 1, Jackson 0 ["9 innings"]  -- Box

AA -- Mobile 2, Jackson 1 [7 innings]  -- Box

Game 1: Yes, there it was!  A semi-rinky-dink seven-inning game that went into "extra" innings and ended up right at nine!  No doubt planned that way by mutual conspiracy.  Good job, BayBears and Generals!

Anyway, it was a scoreless tie at the end of "regulation," thanks to a pitching duel with Trevor Miller (26intheMix) on the Jackson side: 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K.

And, yes, the losing run was scored off of not-quite-so-unhittable Dominic Leone (Talk40 #25), who's been a bit more human lately.

Game 2: Not much offense in the second game either, though it did end "as scheduled" after seven.

Disappointing Jack Marder (Talk40 #17) got his fourth home run.

High-A -- Rancho Cucamonga 18, High Desert 16 [13 innings] -- Box

And a much different kind of extra-inning game.

Tied at 14 after nine, and then scoreless until the 13th.  At which point the Quakes got four, and they held the Mavericks to two in the bottom of the inning.

A homer for Jabari Henry (26intheMix) (plus a walk and a single) ... and ...

A homer for Ketel Marte (26intheMix)?!?  Yes it was.  First of the year.  But it was Adelanto with a 21-mph wind blowing out.  So it's not as strange.  Marte also had a triple, two singles and two walks.

Low-A -- Clinton 4, Wisconsin 3 -- Box

David Holman (Watch List): 7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

Dario Pizzano (26intheMix) had a double and a single.

Short Season-A -- Everett 10, Vancouver 3 -- Box

Thyago Viera: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K.

Two more hits for heating-up Austin Wilson.

Michael Faulkner had two doubles, a single and a walk.

AZL Rookie -- Mariners 5, Royals 2 -- Box

Migueal Brito had a double and two singles.

Looking Ahead

James Paxton (Talk40 #3) for Tacoma

Sure would have liked to see Pizzano get the jump to Jackson. .306-.389-.460 in Clinton. 57 BB/46 walks 34 doubles in116 games.

Everett has clinched a playoff spot and Jackson is eliminated, but Clinton and HD are still alive.
I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.  So I guess they're keeping the Clinton and HD rosters intact.
Playoff berths are not only good for morale but provide additional competitive opportunities, so I think they want those teams to fight for a spot till the end.
