===  No Crying in Baseball, Dept. ===

I/O HQ:  Will get plenty of time in the majors before he's done, probably as a platoon hitters.

"Natural" hitter with pro body hit lots of homers in 2011.  (I didn't realize that Carp hit 29 homers in 409 Tacoma AB's, did you?  Cheney is a whale of a big baseball park.)

Accomplished, as well as tall/strong, hitter who uses entire park and who has professionally worked the count at all levels.

Moderate bat speed, average power to all fields.  Below average defender even at 1B.

Will likely platoon due to big splits - not that he can't learn, but simply because competition at his position is so fierce.

..............

I/O The Rest:  Everybody has completely lost interest.

Carp - who could be argued to be the Mariners' #4 prospect behind the big three - isn't in anybody's top 20.  He's not in HQ's top 15, either, despite their prediction of an ML career for him.

The fact that everybody has lost interest is a clear example of our bias towards the exciting vs. the productive, towards the fresh and novel vs. the proven, towards the possibility and dream vs. the money in the bank.

Carp isn't a great prospect, but he will do a whale of a lot more in the major leagues than will Nate Tenbrink, who's on everybody's top 20.

Sorry Lon.  You know we love ya :- )

..............

Carp's Results:  Mike Carp has done the same thing at every level:

  • 6, 6.5 runs per 27
  • .275/.365/.470
  • 0.50 to 0.70 EYE
  • In other words, Tino Martinez production (not age-adjusted)

This occurred about one-to-two years later than Grade A timelines.  Saying that a player is not a pheenom is not the same thing as saying that he is not a prospect.
