MLB Trade Rumors
You know you've arrived when this shtick can't make yer traveling squad

.

Here y'go amig-O.  Culled for your convenience.  As y'know, we live to serve.  The VERY FIRST QUESTION to Jeffrey Todd made the cut, though the answer did not:

Any news on the Mariners trying to add starting pitching?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Nothing really new on that front. Except they are still looking for value. I still like the match with Hammel.

.

Looking for value.  If you have the SLIGHTEST idea what that means, other than "We're not in for Quintana," please advise.

If Harper has another down year in 2017, do you still think he'd be in line for a huge payday? I'm talking, like, 400MM+
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
Well, he has two more years before free agency, but if 2016 becomes his norm, then no, I don't think he'll be breaking any records. He'd still likely end up making quite a bit of money, b/c he's young, has the upside, and would (in our hypothetical world) still be a very good player.

.

Harper at age 22 posted that .460 OBP and .649 SLG, which is 9.9 WAR.  The very next year, that being 2016, he dropped off in OBP by almost 100 points and in SLG by over 200, which was 1.9 WAR.  In related news, Bill James continues to avoid predicting player seasons unless that player is David Ortiz.

In other related news, here are two guys saying that Shohei Otani's mechanics reek, and that if they could coach him he would hit the ball farther than "through the roof of the stadium" and throw the ball harder than 103 MPH.  As far as I can tell they are not trying to prank themselves.  But here is a more appealing video, 22 minutes' worth of last year's Otani moments.

The W Sox got a lot for Sale and Eaton. Are teams affraid to deal with the Sox due to a huge asking price or the fear that they collect too many top prospects? Or is that just crazy talk?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
That's just crazy talk.
2:28
A) if those were truly huge returns ... well, they got 'em b/c teams weren't afraid to talk. B) returns on one trade really have nothing to do with others, and I generally reject all talk of "if they got X for [not really comparable player A] then they'll get Y for [other player]"
2:29
C) I doubt the rest of baseball is concerned that the White Sox are a budding juggernaut ... this is all just part of the ebb and flow

.

No idea why, but this Meech guy's question tickled my funny bone.  He's got to be in some kinda roto league, no?  Just imagine Theo Epstein sweating bullets at the concept of facing a cross-town Dream Team in the World Series.  HEH

Am I a Bust yet?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Nope.
2:38
Expectations might have changed, but plenty of time to reach the ceiling.

.

Is it just me?  Or is this juvy "am I ..." convention about three years overripe on the vine?  And it's GAINING steam.  The best sabr sites are the ones that are the most infested.  [James Paxton 12:14 a.m. why do I look so sad after throwing a hundred miles an hour fastball?  Dr. D 12 15 a.m. I never got over Jackie Chan's drug-lord mother marrying the cop who busted her.  (True story.)]

.

Seth Smith

Where's the love for me this year? Where will I be on opening day?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
He's a pretty neutral value player. Nice that it's just a one-year commitment. But I wouldn't expect him to return anything exciting.
Still lots of possible landing spots. Really depends on Seattle's motivation, b/c I think teams will believe they can get comparable players at comparable prices without giving up anything in trade value.

.

It's a funny thing.  If we could SIGN Seth Smith at 1 year, $7M we'd probably throw a dumpster full of virtual ticker tape.

How much fun is it when you spend ten paragraphs with tons of sources and research, post it to the site, and the first comment is some pithy complaint because you spelled a word wrong?
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Well, that is annoying, but mostly b/c I messed up. And I'm generally relieved to see the correction right away, so I can fix it and limit the number of people who think I stink.

.

Which is decidedly not Dr. D's feeling.  The part about the tons of sources and research, that is.

Interesting that the two guys in the video assume that he'll have to go with an NL team beause pitchers hit there.

So that would give him ~3 AB every five days.  He has not played in the field in Japan for a couple of years...because why would you risk your best pitcher getting injured?

In the AL, however, a team could offer him any number of DH ABs in a week that they felt was appropriate.  The offer would be, "we'll give you everything you show you deserve."

So I'm not so sure an NL team is mandatory.

It'll be a matter of the signing team promising ABs that will sign him.

If an AL team is willing to try, they have far more opportunities available than an NL team.

I don't think he signs with a team with no ABs, however.
