All Apologies, Dept.

Dr. D, were he with us in dimensions non-astral, would extend his regrets about the lack of shtick over the last week or so.  Good, and not-so-good, reasons for this hiatus might include:

  • The M's self-fulfilling prophecy (that the game was "rigged against them" in July)
  • A 10cm breach in his abdominal incision, brought on by a mild sneeze (comparable in quality-of-life impact to, say, watching a Mariner swing at an 0-0 slider off the plate)
  • The Orcs deciding, at precisely the wrong moment, to compete (note list descends in Agony Factor)
  • Continued echoes of the idea of revamping James Paxton's throwing motion
  • The pre-WS moratorium on discussing 2015, lest it detract from the Angels' humiliation
  • A general curmudgeonry / rebellion without a cause / ennui induced by prospect of UW food

That said.  The Spamfilter "trapped" a few posts by Valued Customers Who De-Value The Login Process.  Permit us to redeem the system with a bit of P.R. recompense:

My friend and I have been debating Cuddyer. He's a Mets fan thinks the same way about Duda as I do about Morrison splitting time at first and the outfield opposite a right-hander (a role just waiting for Cuddyer who could also be DH-ed occasionally). Point is, the demand for Cuddyer could be sky-high, even from national league teams who have an opening at first.

Hey Terry Collins, can I interest you in this shiny Nelson Cruz instead???

On paper, the man is a gift-wrapped "Oh No!  It's On Fire!  Stamp it Out!" doormat present.  You name a regression predictor, he's going to have it.  Underlined.  That, and the fact that he is age 36, should mean that the market for him will be soft.  GM's know about BABIP's, and xPX trends, and birthday cakes. Think Nelson Cruz' sales tour.

But the lowest RC/27 Cuddyer has run, in his 30's, is 5.0.  There are a few M's who don't.  He keeps a very simple upper-body swing.  He hits the top half of the ball inside-out.  Big guys with brains can outlive their Xerox plots, and Dr. D would find Cuddyer an intriguing 2014 add.

If he resode on this plane, that is.

I asked Piniella about the 2000 playoffs, the ALCS in particular, in a Seattle Times chat a couple years ago. He said, paraphrasing, "we just came up a little short that year." It's curious, how the team came as close to the Series as any M's team has, and yet no one talks about that year.

Two words:  you're old.  Try getting the kiddies to talk about Jack Sikma.  It doesn't matter what he did.

"We came up a little short ..."  It's a curious thing that baseball people say.  Skip-O-Vision translation:  We went to war, but the better team win.

The 6th game in the ALCS:  John Halama vs Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez -- one of the great postseason pitchers ever -- and 2 IP of Mariano Rivera.  On both ends, those pitchers represented everything you'll ever learn about the Seattle baseball "soul" and the New York baseball "soul" under George Steinbrenner.

Dr. D sez,

Yes, Egbert, Arsenal would like winning just fine.  As it happens, they don't like it as fine as Chelsea does.  As a rule, their management does a better job of covering its July 31 lethargy than by kicking at the matchsticks on the ground and saying, "Aw, the odds were stacked against us anway."

Just be glad we're not more sour than we are.  This front office so richly deserves a "Top 20 Ways the 2014 Mariners Could Have Gained One Game, If They Wanted It."

They just didn't,

Dr D

The biggest "Tilt" of the front office in '14 was the inability to sign a RH bat who could actually bat.  We flunked that test dismally!
Hart?  Egads!  Jackson?  Terrible!  Denorfia?  Uh...no!  Morales?  Ghastly!  The best RH bat we tried (vL) was Jesus Montero, who Slugged .545 vL.  Of course, we gave him all of 11 vL PA's.

Sigh...

An improved do over in '15, I hope.
