The University of Washington athletic program had an all-around eventful weekend last weekend, with both basketball teams facing off against nationally ranked opponents and the golf teams garnering a couple awards of their own.
First with golf, men's junior golfer Corey Pereira was named to the 2016 Ben Hogan Award watch list on Wednesday, as announced by the Colonial Country Club, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). 25 golfers from around the country made the watch list, which goes to the best collegiate golfer of the year. Pereira had a dominant fall, and by making the list this year, completes a run of five consecutive years that a Husky has been included on the list.
On the women's side, the no. 14 women's golf team won the team title at the Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club in California. The tournament featured nine ranked teams, including top-ranked USC who finished 19 strokes behind UW. Husky senior Charlotte Thomas finished second individually in the tournament with a 1-under 212.
Basketball
Not one to let the golfers get all the award love, Husky basketball star Kelsey Plum brought attention to the hardwood as she was named to the watch list for two end-of-season awards. Again she made the cut for the Naismith Award, being included among the 34 players named to the mid-season team. Also, Plum was among 10 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which goes to the country's best female point guard.
However, even with Plum keeping herself in the picture for national awards, she and the Huskies could not pull out the win against the ninth-ranked Oregon State Beavers. Kevin Neighbors' team had won three-straight home games against top-ten opponents, but the Beavers came in and ended that streak at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Plum notched her eighth 30-point game of the season, but it was not nearly enough to overcome UW shooting 30.2 percent as a team.
Their 61-53 loss knocks the Huskies to 7-4 in Pac-12 play and 16-6 overall. Oregon State improved to 10-1 in the Pac-12 and 18-3 overall.
For the men, they too hosted a ranked opponent in Montlake, as the no. 23 Arizona Wildcats came through on their visit of the Washington schools. Lorenzo Romar's squad made it a close game, but ended up falling in the end 77-72.
Behind the play of Ryan Anderson's 22 points and 15 rebounds, the Wildcats completed a road sweep of Washington and Washington State, whom they beat in Pullman earlier in the week. Andrew Andrews led UW with 20 points.
Washington fell to 15-8 overall and 7-4 in Pac-12 play. Again they failed to get a win against a ranked opponent, something they will desperately need if they want to make the NCAA tournament come March, especially if they don't win the Pac-12 Conference Tournament.
