While the Seattle Sounders may have suffered a loss this past weekend in terms of a bust of a match, they did happen to score a win for the environment. As a part of Impact Seattle, “a collection of events that focus on supporting the greater Seattle community,” they hosted the MLS WORKS Greener Goals Week of Service. All 20 teams in the US are working together to help make their communities more sustainable and environmentally-friendly, and the Sounders started in on the project this past weekend.
Working with Washington Green Schools, the Sounders worked on planting at B.F. Day Elementary School for Earth Day. The worked on creating raised garden beds, showing how the Sounders are just as adept with hammers, nails and wood as they are with soccer balls. They worked alongside elementary students to plant new plants at the school, taking a few moments to pose for the camera and show how much fun they were having at the event. Be sure to visit the Sounders’ Facebook page to see photos of the event. Comment on the pics to show your support and say which is your favorite.
To get in on the giving weekend and help support the Washington Green Schools, you can donate here. The mission of Washington Green Schools “is to challenge students and schools to create sustainable communities through educational experiences that transform school environments.” Fans visited the page to thank the Sounders and express how happy the event made them. The Sounders are not just giving back with this event, of course. They have done many amazing works of charity, from working with the Ronald McDonald House to speaking at school events, participating in WE Day and much, much more. They also hosted a Positive Coaching Alliance day this past weekend. PCA is a movement for improving the culture of sports to a more encouraging place for kids to play and grow in a positive experience. They are also helping out with projects for the Boys and Girls Clubs this year, working with the YouthForce University’s Teen Employment Conference to help young people expand their skills, gain confidence and find new opportunities.
What do you think of all of the things that the Sounders do for the community? Are there any partnerships that you would like to see happen? What is your favorite charity that the Sounders have worked with in the past?
