Barcelona do the impossible

It couldn't be done they said, the second leg was merely a formality. No one had ever overcome a 4-0 deficit in the Champions League, and with the way Barcelona had been playing this season, it did not seem like they would be the ones to make the record books.

They had fallen behind rivals Real Madrid in their domestic title race, and uncertainty had been surrounding the club as manager Luis Enrique made it official that he would not be returning after this season. Coming into the game Paris Saint-Germain had been gloating already, the entire city was already making predictions for the next round.

Seems like the public cockiness invaded the players' psyche, as they posted their confidence on social media. Turns out they never had the mental make up of a champion as PSG will now go down as one of the biggest choke jobs in the history of sports.

However the match did not prove itself immune from incurring any sort of controversy. PSG's Blaise Matuidi was booked for a penalty for a late challenge on Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti which many were debating after the match. Later Julian Draxler had a shot deflect of Javier Mascherano's arm in the penalty area, but not whistle was blown.

Perhaps the biggest controversy of the day (no actually it has to be the biggest) was the last minute goal to clinch the round for los cules. Replays show Sergi Roberto could have been called offsides, although to me it looked like he was just onside as he broke for the ball to score the winning goal.

Understandably, the Camp Nou erupted. So much so that an earthquake was recorded in the area from all the noisey celebration. PSG was certainly in control for a majority of the match, and it seemed like they were due to move on right up until the very end.

Barcelona's last three goals were all made after the 88th minute, with Neymar netting two of them. The Brazilian started the frenzy with a goal in the 88th, then converted a penalty in the 93rd minute. Sergi Roberto got the clincher in the very last minute of injury time, converting a volley off a free kick into the box.

Rivals Real Madrid also moved on to the quarterfinals, albeit in less dramatic fashion with a 3-1 win over Napoli the night before. Madrid came into the match with a 3-1 advantage already.
