Recapping UW's National Signing Day

National Signing Day came and went this past Wednesday, and the University of Washington had a fairly drama-free day. While they didn't get any surprise commits, they didn't lose any either. Which is a huge positive as they snagged a class ranked in the top half of the Pac 12 conference.

Chris Petersen has grown accustomed to getting significant contributions from each class as soon as they step onto campus in Montlake. Defensive back Budda Baker, quarterback Max Browing and running back Myles Gaskin all played key roles for the Huskies their freshman year.

Coming from a mid-major power like Boise State, no one doubted Petersen could coach. However it was another facet of college coaching that many coaches making the jump from a mid-major school are faced with, can he recruit? So far, so good for Petersen. He has been able to keep the state's top recruits in purple and gold, save for this year's top quarterback in the country Jacob Eason, who of course committed to Georgia.

Nonetheless he signed seven four-star recruits and 10 three-stars, according to 24/7 Sports. No five-stars this year, but only USC and UCLA were among the Pac-12 programs that did with two and one, respectively.

Among those four-stars was Camilo Eifler from Berkley, CA. Eifler is one of the top linebacker prospects in the country, as proven by his inclusion in the US Army All-American game. He comes from the same California high school power as ormer Huskies and NFL tight end Eric Bjornson and current starting defensive back Kevin King, Bishop O' Dowd.

Likely one of the best signs of Petersen's recruiting acumen is how he keeps a steady flow of signees coming from the state's best high school program, Bellevue. And why shouldn't he, they're only on the other side of Lake Washington. Just like Budda Baker before him Bellevue high defensive back Isaiah Gilchrist will be in Montlake, and could be in the defensive backfield with Baker come fall. According to 247 Sports, Gilchrist is Washington state's no. 3 recruit.

Washington has been blessed with the nation's best production from the running back position. From Chris Polk to Bishop Sankey after him and now Myles Gaskin, the running game has never been a weak spot in recent years. And from the looks of it, it won't be for the next four years either. The Huskies were able to sign California's Gatorade Player of the year Sean NcGrew out of St. John Bosco High School, the same school that produced form UW quarterback Keith Price.

The program seems to be on an upward trajectory, with Petersen pulling in a stronger class of recruits every year. No doubt the Huskies will be competing for a Rose Bowl spot within the near future.
