Stephen Pryor busts out the low slider

.

John Malkovich in Retired Extremely Dangerous, picking up an exotic Scandinavian machine pistol ... now thissssss.  Is.  Exxxxcccccciting.  ... When we last saw our hero, he was throwing an explosive fastball that was not only 95-98 MPH, but that also was

  • Thrown from nearly 7 feet off the ground
  • Thrown with 2600 RPM and extreme late life
  • Featuring 11-15 inches of rise, more rise than any other fastball in the majors
  • Targeted consistently above the waist, where hitters had no way to get "on top of" the pitch

With this pitch alone, Pryor was dominating.  But if you know a baseball thing, the Rays also know that baseball thing, and they came ready to do battle.

 .........................................................

On the first pitch from Pryor Tuesday, Jeff Keppinger guessed high fastball, got high fastball and, starting the bat as Pryor wound up, then took a prissy little pepper swing at it.  Pryor supplying the power, the horsehide badminton-ed out at 100 MPH into right center field.

g.

Looks like he could use three or four days without picking up a baseball.  But in any case, SSI becomes more and more convinced that you're going to be talking about a 1-inning pitcher here.

That's not the takeaway here.  The takeaway is [Pryor exploding fastball thrown high] times [Pryor diving slider thrown low] equals [14 strikeouts per nine or some silly slop].

Cheers,

Dr D
