The Seahawks have been busy in NFL free agency thus far. Some big losses have occurred including Bruce Irvin to the Raiders and NT Mebane.
The biggest of all losses just occurred this week, however, with the departure of long-tenured Left Tackle Russell Okung.
Okung has been acting as his own agent and apparently did so pretty well. A report by Adam Shefter of ESPN originally said it did not look too good for Okung a week prior. Fast forward just a smidge and it looks just fine.
At first, Shefter's report, did not come as too much of a surprise. With Okung unusualy acting in his own behalf...and starting the process by sending all 32 teams lengthy details on shoulder surgery he required this off-season, it made a lot of sense that perhaps he would not do too well.
In the end, things could not have turned out much better. Okung landed with the Superbowl Champion Broncos. Yes...the Broncos have a bit of a large gap at QB, but they will still contend. Okung will only help this process and QB further, as he gives them a better chance to stay upright.
Adding insult to injury with the loss of Okung, was the resigning of Oakland's left tackle Penn. Penn was in Seattle's crosshairs, but the Raiders continue to make things happen and retain good players. Along with taking Irvin from the Hawks, the Raiders are showing they will make a playoff push.
So what is next.. Well first the Seahawks must figure out what to do at LT. Many stories ate out there. Okung's signing will put Denver LT Ryan Clady on the block, but he is coming off of an ACL tear. Could tge Hawks take a chance on him though like the Bronvos took on Okung? Perhaps...
Joe Thomas of the Browns has been named...but seems like a long shot. Thomas has made the Pro Bowl every year in Cleveland. He would come at a high price, but this is not out of the question. The Browns have done more bizarre. For Seattle it would be a dream scenario and even an upgrade from Okung.
Gary Gilliam could move from right side to left..another stretch. Webb, who Seattle just got from Oakland maybe could move to LT...another big stretch.
Each day that goes by points closer to perhaps a draft pick to fill the spot.
In two weeks time we should know as a deal would have to be done fairly soon if the Hawks will get someone who can fill Okung's shoes.
