Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 4
Taijuan & Lars have short outings ... big game for Pizzano ... expected news on Montero ... etc.

News:

AAA -- Iowa 8, Tacoma 4  -- Box

Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) is obviously being used judiciously as the season goes along.  Sunday: 3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

He was victimized by Mike Olt, the one-time Ranger prospect who is now an Iowa Cub thanks to the Matt Garza trade.  Olt got a double and triple off Walker.  He won't be a division rival now at least.

Montero went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, and if he does not appeal I believe he's out immediately and can be replaced on the 40-man roster.

Joseph Dunigan homered.

AA -- Jackson 3, Mobile 1  -- Box

Better pitching was found at AA.  Anthony Fernandez (Talk40 #23) has not racked up strikeouts this year, but he's brought his ERA down to 4.01 after a terrible start coming off injury.

Sunday: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

And, once again, The Carson Show! concluded the evening's programming.  Carson Smith (Talk40 #13) got his 12th save: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

Julio Morban (Talk40 #15) and Ramon Morla each had two hits and a stolen base.

High-A -- Lancaster 6, High Desert 5 -- Box

Jabari Henry (26intheMix) hasn't gotten off to a great start in California, but Sunday was a strong positive move: 2-for-4 with a home run.

Jamal Austin had three hits from the leadoff spot.

Low-A -- Clinton 11, Kane County 1 -- Box

It's been awhile, but Hail Columbia!

Ivy Leaguer Dario Pizzano (26intheMix) had two triples plus a double.  That's got to be a pretty rare combination.  He ended up contributing four RBI to the rout.

Also kind of rare: going 8.0 IP without a strikeout or a walk.  But that was the line for Scott DeCecco: 8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K.

More hits for Ketel Marte (26intheMix): 4-for-5 with a double.  Now hitting .296.

Short Season-A -- Boise 10, Everett 5 -- Box

If you're interested, here's proof that baseball fields in Boise are not blue.

Lars Huijer didn't give up any runs, but had a short outing.  Maybe he's being conserved; maybe something happened; not sure: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

Regardless, the Hawks racked up 10 runs off of the bullpen.

But some good offense from Justin Seager, who had two doubles, and Bryan Brito, who had three singles.

Rookie -- Pulaski 8, Bristol 4 -- Box

Pulaski jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Bri-Sox and never looked back.

A nice outing for Ramire Cleto: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

After struggling all year, suddenly Gabrial Franca (Talk40 #30) has nine hits in his last five games.  That equals what he had in the first 27.  Seriously.  He has 18 hits all year, and nine of them are in the last week.

But there's more than meets the eye here.  In those 27 games: BABIP of .153, but OBP of .352, thanks to a ton of walks.   In those past five games: BABIP of .643.  So fortune turning in Franca's favor.

Looking At Monday

A short schedule, with Everett on its all-star break.  Blake Beavan is set for Tacoma.

It also looks like that's Everett, not Memorial Stadium. Note the Mariners crest on the left field fence. Memorial Stadium is pictured here. -- http://www.milb.com/content/page.jsp?ymd=20090313&content_id=40997878&si...
But both are green. Boise's just takes more watering to make and keep it that way.
Also, though several of my kids live in Boise, I'm in Rockford, near Blackfoot, four hours away. Until recently, though, one of my daughters lived in an apartment complex behind the Garden City Library almost across from the Stadium.

The game was in Everett.  The article was on the Boise website, and that threw me off.
All for a lame joke about blue turf.
At least Boise State managed to avoid having to play in the "Big" "East"

Tend to blur in my memory. I went to Dodd in Norwich, CT a bunch of times while I was in Groton, but I'm not sure I'd recognize it now in a picture. Same with Maleleuca in Idaho Falls, though I see that periodically - I'd probably recognize the signage. It was the signage at Everett that kicked my synapses that it wasn't Boise's (Garden City's) park, and that I'd seen it before. Another of my daughters lives in Spokane, so I hope to see the AquaSox there in late August. Living in Bremerton so long, I'm very familiar with Cheney, but I haven't been there since the uplift. Anyway, not sure an apology is required.
And in any case, THE BLUE TURF IS UGLY and I can't believe the legislature, which pinches so many pennies in every other area, let them get away with that. Then must have been convinced that it conserved water or something.
