Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 2
Victor stays on vector ... should we care that Montero is heating up? ... Barbosa on the radar ... etc.

AAA -- Omaha 9, Tacoma 3  -- Box

Dare we find it intriguing that Jesus Montero is hitting .263/.364/.474 in his last 10 games?  Probably not.  But there it is.

Of course, I have to keep up my online mock-feud with The Artist Formerly (and still) Known as He For Whom We Coughed Up Shin-Soo Choo.  Ben Broussard had a single and two walks.

And Royals prospect Danny Duffy shut down the Rainiers for 5.0 IP with 9 K, while Andrew Carraway (Watch List) did not similarly shut down the Storm Chasers (3.2 IP, 6 ER).

AA -- Mobile 5, Jackson 1  -- Box

Diamondbacks prospect Archie Bradley did an even better shutdown of the Generals with a complete-game six-hitter with only one unearned run, one walk and seven strikeouts.

But half of those hits came from Chris Taylor (Talk40 #28), who went 3-for-4.

High-A -- Lancaster 11, High Desert 2 -- Box

Things didn't go too well for the Mavericks either.

But Steven Proscia (26intheMix) and Brock Hebert (26intheMix) both got triples.

Low-A -- Clinton 7, Beloit 3 -- Box

Finally, a team that's right on vector.

Victor Sanchez (Talk40 #12): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K.

And a home run from Timmy Lopes (Talk40 #20)?  Why, yes, it was! His first of the year.

And Ketel Marte (26intheMix) had three more hits, including a double.

Rookie -- Pulaski 9, Danville 3 -- Box

Eddie Campbell continued his cruise through appalachia: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

The ex-Hokie is certainly the strikeout king of southwestern Virginia, we know that.

The P-Mariners put the game away with a seven-run 4th, all coming on singles and walks, except for a double from Wilton Martinez.

Red hot Aaron Barbosa, the undrafted guy plucked from the Cape Cod League, had two more hits and a walk and is hitting .407/.500/.519 in his first 10 games.

AZL Rookie -- Mariners 6, Indians 3 -- Box

Paul Fry is a lefty picked in the 17th round out of a junior college in Michigan.  I haven't been paying attention to him, but he now has 23 K and just 3 BB in his first 10 appearances.  He went 4.0 IP with no earned runs and three strikeouts Friday.

Looking Ahead

Edwin Diaz (Talk40 #36) is listed for Pulaski, and Roenis Elias (26intheMix) for Jackson.

Yes, it was at a community college, but Small Fry (says he's six feet tall now, but was 5'7 as a junior in high school and didn't start pitching til he grew half a foot over the summer) has a really interesting arm.  He started this last game (4 IP since he's on a count and they're trying to get decent innings for everyone) and I'm really curious to see what he does going forward.  You'd think reliever automatically due to his size and relative inexperience as a pitcher, but we'll see. I'm fond of him.
Campbell certainly needs more of a challenge, but I expect him to finish taking his victory lap in front of family and friends this year in Pulaski, then head up to Clinton next year for a full season of work.
Bradley did mulch us, but there's no shame in that.  If Walker isn't the best pitching prospect in the nation, then Bradley is.  They're pretty identical.  And a couple more good pitchers going for our side today.
With most of the best bats in the bigs now, it's interesting to switch focus back toward soome of the arms.
