M's down 5-2 in the 9th, hit a walkoff grand slam.
What is the expected win delta on that pitch? :- )
I/O: Luke French now on the cusp of getting some Safeco starts. Amidst much weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth.
CRUNCH: SSI has been a bit mis-read on Mr. French. He has a very low chance of having a good career in the long term, we sez. But! that doesn't mean he can't cobble together a dozen okay starts. Any quality AAA pitcher is capable of winning 50% of his MLB games for a month or two, and certainly French is better than "any quality AAA pitcher."
French has a big time yellow hammer and three pitches, and though he's fringe ML, that doesn't mean that the M's can't win 50% of his starts over a short stretch.
Actually think French has a little better shot in the long term than Vargas. You can visualize the Bansai tree of a 100 ERA+ from French, whereas SSI sees Vargas as defying gravity with no way to adapt.
.
CRUNCH: But whether Snell, French and Vargas are SSI's kind of pitchers, I'll take a million of 'em before I take the $8-12m Batistas and Silvas. With gusto.
Stars & Scrubs baby. At least we can do something about it, if and when they struggle. Mix and match until you find a hot hand. Remember, it's now [Cliff Lee and our pick of Fister-Vargas-French] vs [Batista and Silva].
And I'll take Snell, French and Vargas over the random meatballs that the 80's M's used to choose...
.
I/O: David Pauley on the M's radar. Baker with an interesting anecdote that he sits on one side of the locker room by himself, and for two weeks they've been coming in, expecting to see his locker boarded up. He just keeps hanging around.
Good outing today.
Is apparently the M's #7 starter right now, not counting Lee. If French went down, Pauley would be next man up. Or so we hear.
.
CRUNCH: Pauley is a Padres / Red Sox journeyman who throws 87-89 mph, groundballer but not extremely so (1.8 ratio), will definitely give you strikes.
There are dozens and dozens of these guys around baseball, and Pauley's presumably one of the better ones. He's got a lifetime 2.0 control in the bigs, across a few seasons. There are a whale of a lot of guys who don't.
As Baker has pointed out, Zduriencik places a HUGE amount of his evaluation on a player's head and heart. The M's obviously like Pauley's makeup.
SSI goes to the cold, unforgiving lens in the sky. There is no signature weapon here to transcend AAA. Value is at org level, giving depth, and maybe a stoploss for a month in the bigs.
.
I/O: Looks like Vargas and Fister start the year in the rotation. Presumably if one outpitches the other in 2 GS, that one sticks.
CRUNCH: Fair enough.
But hopefully the M's will expand this to say, "whichever 2-3-4-5 gets bashed first, steps out for Lee." I'd just as soon Ian Snell go to swing man, if Vargas and Fister throw two good games and Snell gets smashed. Same goes for RRS.
And the same goes for when Bedard gets back. That is precisely your saving grace with Stars & Scrubs -- keep the fish that measure 12 inches, throw back the ones that don't.
CRUNCH: The Sept. 2009 M's evidently were as impressed with Doug Fister as SSI was, because he clearly came into camp as the #5 starter. Forget which amigo admonished me on March 15, "don't worry, Doogie isn't on a short leash," but he had that right.
Again: I think there's a good 40% chance that Fister will be a nice surprise at the ML level. Think about that 7:1 PCL control, too. But Fister isn't a mortal lock the way Shawn Kelley would be. Don't hold us to a guarantee on 'im.
.
Good show,

10 up, 10 down. Wok says he now gets a start with the regulars. Today's start might have pushed him to Starter 5b-6, not counting Cliff Lee.
.............
That gives Pauley 6k, 2bb in 15 innngs, not a template I like, but who knows. Maybe he has refined his command or something.
OTOH his groundball ratio this spring, isn't. He's at about 1.1 grounders.
................
Still, he could serve as an important stoploss this April. Worth watching.
French has been throwing a lot of groundballs in his last two starts, and was a ground ball pitcher in the minor leagues. I have a feeling we won't be seeing the near 50% fly balls we saw last year.
I see him as a slight fly ball guy against righties and a slight groundball guy against lefties going forward. Neutral, rather than extreme flyball.
As much as I hated him early on, I think I like him more than most at this point. That he's focused on his changeup this spring helps him out a lot.
Not my kinda pitcher, but don't want to exaggerate it like he couldn't make a few starts in a pinch.
And, unlike Vargas, he's not maxed out. There's unknown territory there.
Love, love, love the emergence of Pauley. Not because I like him, but because as you allude to Doc, he's another (potentially) servicable BOR starter.
The M's will in fact churn the roster in this department. They were willing all last year to let the other teams play whack-a-mole with Vargas, Olson, Fister, etc. No reason not to this year as well, they're willing to leave any of them behind if they can't get the job done.
It's the only way to do it, really. Any one of those guys could pop just a bit, at any time. There is literally no way of knowing which one, or when. So you run 'em out there, coach them well, and play whoever is doing the best.
In that regard, I really don't care which of Fister-Vargas-Olson-French-Pauley is pitching for the M's; they're all kinda the same pitcher. Until one of 'em ain't. : )
I do beleeb that he also lined out with the bases juiced earlier in the game.
New plan, keep Junior in the training room until his AB's, when you roll him out there, turn off the big screen and tell him it's 2 outs and bottom of the 9th. : )
there is a seeeeaaaaason Churn Chu--rr-rn, CHURN...
I root for those AAA-AAAA guys who light up ST. Pauley's doing that. Give him a Week One start!
When the questions are about Vargas or Fister, he goes into some depth in the post game interviews, in regards to French or Olsen, I haven't seen him expand beyond. With Olsen, as far as results go, this seems reasonable. But with French, news has gotten out about improved velocity, improved/more work on his change (not from Wakamatsu unless I'm mistaken), and the results have been mostly positive, but it really seems like he was never even considered for the rotation. If anybody is interested, I went through the pitches today and noted the ones that were below 80 that registered as either a change or a cutter (pitchFX is being wonky and had cutters and change both around the same velo as his fastball and 8-10 miles below, so I assume anything that didn't register slider under 80 was a change). There were 26 pitches at that speed, 19 for strikes, 6 swinging and 3 looking. If he can make the change a plus pitch to go along with his slider, and if he can keep the groundballs up, Zach Duke might be something to hope for as a comparison.
I don't know why it did that
I'm interested.
Like Shields, I'm a little higher on him than most due to his work early in '09 before he was traded. Reports of him recovering from dead arm (and the changeup) are all positives.
Never noticed that before you said it - that when Wok isn't thrilled about a player, his comments get politer and terser.
Great catch.
