Did you watch the game today Doc? You may have been working...it was an afternoon game on the west coast. Felix did not pitch the 8th because he aggravated his ankle not once, not twice, but three separate times and the Mariners wanted to be careful. He never wants out of a game and if he can just stop hurting himself trying to play defense, he will show you he is most certainly NOT a 100 pitch pitcher.
Right NOW...Bedard is the better pitcher in terms of results...I think Felix will have better numbers at the end of the year though.

Was at the game. He came out for the 7th on the same ankle he could have come out for the 8th. The ankle could just as well have forced him out after 90 pitches as after 104.
BTW, Felix will pitch with the ankle all year, most likely, unless they allow him to skip a couple turns in a row. Few pitchers are going out there pain-free.
.....................
In any case, let's say you think Felix Hernandez is a 110-pitch pitcher. I'll stand by my defense that Erik Bedard gets a bum rap for not throwing 6 or 8 pitches more per start...
Point isn't that Felix wimped out. It's that with the investments teams have in these fragile starters, about 100 pitches is the norm any more.

Felix is far more TALENTED than Bedard, and he's getting there in terms of pitchability... the day may come when he's the best pitcher in baseball...
Right now, I'm not sure Erik Bedard isn't the best pitcher in baseball :- )

Oh I totally agree about Bedard being mistreated by the Media in Seattle...I was the first guy over at MarinerCentral to call out one of the "10 questions" guys form the media when he called Bedard a wuss and a richard. I also demonstrated that when he was healthy, Beadard threw only 9 of his 28 starts less than 100 pitches and in 6 starts he threw more than 110. LOL
So yeah...I think Bedard is less willing to pitch on loser teams and more willing to pitch when it matters...and yeah, I think Seattle's press was being juvenile and unfair in their attacks on him.
I would also agree that if Bedard can do his thing this well all year, he might come out the best pitching in the AL (maybe all of baseball) and that Felix hasn't maxed out his potential yet. :)

Doc: "I’m not sure Erik Bedard isn’t the best pitcher in baseball"
Sandy: "I am. He is."
At this point, I think "if healthy", Bedard is better than Santana. The combination of stuff and knowing how to use it puts him ahead of any other hurler in the game today, IMHO.
I also think that he adjusts his game to get the most out of his talent based on the spate of variables around him - primarily, how good is his defense. With a good defense, he gets more aggressive, which RAISES his K-rate, lowers his walk rate, but costs him a couple of extra dingers. With a bad defense, he nibbles a bit more, lowering his K-rate, raising his walk rate, but saving some HRs.
I also think the 'fragile' tag is reasonable. Not that he's a "wuss" for throwing only 100, but that his game requires him to be on the very edge of what his body can take, so he's regularly at risk of tweaking something.
I also think that if he doesn't figure out a slightly better balance for pushing himself, his career could crumble. On the other hand, if he figures out a slightly more efficient effort/output mixture, he could be dominanting for another 10 years. The line between Pedro and Unit for Beddard is razor thin. Thus far, he's been more Pedro, but I am not convinced he cannot move in the direction of Unit if things break right for him.

Preach it brother!
There's a reason, some 10 years back, that the term "Silentpadna" came to be. I know you remember it.
I have been the. only. one. in my circle of friends that I talk to outside the net that has been 100% in favor of the Bedard trade since day 1. In hindsight, I would still do it again.
It's not about what you may perceive as a window of opportunity for the pennant. It's about your window of opportunity to get in on a Cy Young caliber pitcher - pennant windows can be (obviously not always) the result of the window of opportunity to pull these kinds of guys in. You pass on Bedard then, when is your next opportunity to do it? How do you know your offer will be the one taken when one is available?
When he's right, he's a joy to watch. I have been drafting (or buying) him in every fantasy league I've been able to since '04.

We need to extend Bedard. I don't really care what it costs (because I doubt it's going to cost all that much given his upside potential...I think he'd sign for 4/60)...you accept the possible injuries if it gives four more shots at having the world class 1-2 punch we need.

Since 2004! no kidding Russ?
So he was a longtime fave before he hit the big time?
................
BTW, where are you as to his personality, in general?
