Trayvon and Granderson: PWR, SPD

Q.  How similar is their PWR?

A.  Both have plus PWR, and both have the same kind of developing PWR.

Before the year, HQ gave Trayvon 4 **** for PWR, despite 2 and 9 homers the last two stops.  The HR spike was prophesied by them.  Make no mistake - you're talking 20-25 homers, tons of doubles and triples, and all around game that pushes the RC/27 (or EqA, wOBA, if you prefer) up into the 6's.

Granderson hit 'only' 19 homers as a rookie, but had an RC/27 way up there at 6.0 because of doubles, triples, BB's, and SB's.  These types of players gain you bases every which way.

If you've got visceral doubts about Trayvon's PWR, check this video.  Justin Smoak power the other way, with a shorter path to the ball.  Check the follow-through on this tater; you can see the "6-inch punch" bat acceleration.

Not saying that Trayvon is going to hit 40 homers, like he's doing (per 155 games) in AAA.   But he's definitely got Ackley-type power, and Granderson hit 20-25 for several years, and then started going for 30+.

You're not talking about Denard Span.  This is a muscular kid with serious leverage on the baseball.  30 homers isn't off the table, as he is demonstrating right now.

Q.  How does the PWR increase?

A.  As these types of 5-tool guys start to anticipate pitches better --- > they start to clear their front hip better.

In Golf My Way, Jack Nicklaus said that "in going for a big one," he didn't take the club back any farther.  "My primary thought is to clear my front knee and hip aggressively."

Curtis Granderson is doing precisely this now, as he bashes his way to megastardom.  Check the vids and you'll see his belt buckle clear way out in front before contact.

Don't take my word for it:  go look at some video yourself, and actually watch the belt buckle.  :- )

Q.  Is the DEF and SPD a comp?

A.   I love how Trayvon runs... low to the ground, feet wide apart, upper body pumping, the "scramble" run.  He's a burner.

Before this year, he had 80-some stolen bases in the last two years.  Granderson also has been a 20-20 guy in three major league seasons now.  It's not that 20-20 is flashy; it's that you're piling on the wOBA in so many ways.

Granderson, of course, got credit for +10 to +15 runs saved as a young CF, while being criticized for a noodle arm.  Trayvon Robinson is in exactly that classic mold.  It ain't a lot of SB types who have massive chests and Jay Buhner arms.

BaseballHQ gives Robinson the max 4**** for CF defense and considers him a pure CF, not interested in him as a LF or RF.  They him a 9D grade (30% chance at All-Star performance in the majors).
