Mariner Central / SSI Podcast #2 Up

Go flip Lonnie some grief for enabling 60 minutes of my incoherent paranoia.  MC link here has the embedded audio.

One topic of discussion:  how the Mariners will configure this big flotilla of talent.  Bill James, in his 1980's abstracts, used to talk about teams like the Mariners' ... okay, you've got a collection of new players; how do you turn this unruly heap into a ballclub?

One problem is this.  Did you notice which two players finished the 0H 2012 the strongest?  It was Kyle Seager and Alex Liddi.  And by a long ways.

Seager had an EYE around 1.00 down the stretch -- while at the same time raising his ISO near .200.  The last 2-3 weeks, he was everything Chris Snelling ever hoped to be ... if Snelling ever hoped to play shortstop, that is.

If Seager were to hit like that, you wouldn't have any choice about starting him.  You can't keep a 6.0 RC/27 player on the bench.  It's against the rules.

....

Liddi kept his own EYE within reasonable limits while flashing an ISO more like -- wait for it -- .350.  Lonnie axed pointedly, Does Liddi get to compete for a job in March, or doesn't he?

Well, if he doesn't, why was he up here?  Are you going to investigate a player, have him score straight A's, and then decide you shouldn't have investigated him?

I'm not saying he should have the job; I'm saying he was the most helium-filled balloon at Safeco in September.

....

So, what then.  Are you really going to play Liddi 3B and Seager SS?  That would be two things:  (1) a weirdly bat-first configuration of your "ballclub," and (2) an acknowledgement that these two players are the ones who have been shouting "I wanna start for the Seattle Mariners!"

Amplifying the problem:  the SSI solution to center field is now to put Casper Wells there.  Just about as fast as Michael Saunders, could probably run a + UZR there, and Wells can hit.  (Trayvon needs more time in AAA, and you can't take your ballclub's K's past critical mass.)

Liddi, Seager, Carp, and Wells all hitting together?  Huh.

....

Other topics:  When Taijuan could pitch in the majors, per historical comps for him.  Michael Pineda and Justin Smoak for Joey Votto (hey, I'm not the emcee at MC).  The Moneyball movie, which Lonnie hates, and Bill James, which Lonnie likes.  My scathing review of Lookout Landing ;- ) ... Lonnie even blackjacks me behind the head with a prepared question from G-Moneyball.

Lemme know where we went wrong.  :- )

Cheers,

Jeff

Laurel and Hardy, Mutt and Jeff...we have the two of you. That was well done! The banter back and forth is a joy to listen to. I appreciate how each of you give insight and are willing to justify your opinions. Thanks!
Funny you mention Ramirez' struggle here in Colorado Springs with the thin/dry air resulting in little movement on the curve. I see CS in many ways as a High Desert for pitchers. My sons have a blast if we are at sea level seeing what a knuckle curve can do with some resistence. But it always makes me wonder why it takes most so long for pitchers today to have an effective change up.
You covered a lot of positions for '12. Any thoughts on what you would be doing with the 2 spot for the year(s) ahead?

Somebody proposed Pineda AND Smoak for Votto?  Really!  Yikes!
Wells needs to start in CF, yep! Get what you can for Guti.
I'm all in on Seager at SS.  A-L-L I-N!  Opening Day, pencil him in.  It  either works or doesn't (it will, btw) but making a 35 double and 12 homer guy a utility bat is silly. Just give him the shot.  I like Ryan a lot, especially if he's the utility guy.  He's a fragile guy, anyway.  Or just figure he's a bullpen arm in trade.
Liddi? He can field the position, 2/3 of his hits were for extra bases AND he's going to hit for a better average next time around. What else do you want? Unless we sign a stud 3B (why would you do that now?) he's got to enter ST as the guy.  If he totally washed out in ST I suppose I could see starting him down....or doing it to preserve the year.  But mostly I'm for sticking him at the hot corner and watching him grow.
Carp?  Depends on who you sign.  LF or 1B or DH, put him into one of those spots and leave him alone..  Personally, I think he showed fine range and a glove in left.  He can play there.  I might be tempted to play him at 1B and DH Smoak.
Trayvon starts in Tacoma, good call.  I agree.

Make it all so.

Considering that you're the only guy here who's actually in baseball ;- ) you're awfully gracious to the rest of us.
Number two in the batting order, y'mean?  Seager's a natural when he's playing ...
Or you mean catcher?  Your guess is good as mine... Adam Moore is not yet a writeoff ... big trade targets like Mesoraco are not beyond the long arm of Mr. Z...
Your thoughts RJ?

... a placeholder for when Mike McGee takes over in 2013/2014!
I still don't particularly care for Wells in CF.  My dream scenario is that Ichiro moves to center, Wells takes over in RF (where his bat profiles), and Carp mans LF.  I can live with that arrangement quite nicely.
I'm dead serious about the CF talent in the minor league system making it's way up.  Danny Carroll (.299/.418/.477/.896, 62 stolen bases!  88/156 BB/SO) just needs to cut down on his K's, and he would be a phenominal MLB CF, and he'll be manning the spot at AA next year.
Down in Clinton you have my boy Mike McGee (.283/.351/.426/.777, 23/40 BB/SO, picked in 15th round of the 2011 draft), who will rip the Cal League a new one in 2012 and may leap over Carroll if Danny-Boy falters.
At Everett we had Jarrett Burgess (.220/.300/.390/.690) who struggled a bit with injuries, but was solid down the stretch, and 2011 17th round draft pick Nathan Melendres (.285/.341/.406/.747, ) who was solid from the first time he stepped onto a professional baseball field.
Even down as far as Pulaski in the Appy League the Mariners have a guy playing CF who made a name for himself in 2011.  Picked in the 13th round of the 2011 draft, Jamal Austin (.335/.405/.383/.789, 22/21 BB/SO, 20 stolen bases) handled the advanced rookie league very well, and if it hadn't been for other talented CFers in the system would probably have been promoted up the chain at some point last season.
Anybody hear of this James Zamarripa (.266/.329/.331/.660) kid that the Mariners drafted in the 6th round this year out of high school?  If you hadn't, you probably will over the next few years.  He spent his debut season down in the Arizona League and may have shown enough to make the move up to Everett in 2012.
Ya, I'm high on the CRers in the system...

I need to remember to proof what I put here! At least attempt to! I have so much to learn and honestly, really enjoy learning so much from all of you!
I had meant #2 as in the Catcher position but was happy to see Seager penciled in there. I hope they can let some of these kids have a chance to success and not pull the plug on them too quickly.

Lonnie,

Why wouldn't you put Wells in CF?  If he has the bat to play RF, then he could be a monster in CF, making our offense just that much better.
Or do you think Wells can't cover the field adequately defensively?
