And the winner of the weekend box office is...

It's not surprising that Lone Survivor won the weekend box office. What is surprising, however, is how handily it did so. Essentially, this film crushed all competition, including Frozen, which is showing incredible staying power since it's release. Having just started the Lone Survivor book, I can tell you that I am now very interested in seeing this movie. If it's half as compelling as the book, it's an amazing story of survival despite all odds.

Box office preview: Will 'Lone Survivor' come out on top?

This weekend, we've got two major new box office releases. Will they do well? That remains to be seen, but with so many excellent films out right now, it'll be competitive and theaters will likely be crowded. Lots of us were stuck at home last weekend because of bad weather, forced to watch DVDs from the cozy comforts of our couches (oh, the horror!). I was one of them, but I must confess: I've been itching to get out again. This weekend looks like the perfect time.

Zduriencik's Data Mining Operation

.

We've been debating the orientation, or not, of the M's saber inclinations.  (Not that kind of orientation!)  Jeff Sullivan has an article up in which he, ever-so-gently, advises the lynch mob that it might want to get some facts before it tosses its torches onto the thatch roof.

He links us to this Colin O'Keefe interview of Jesse Smith.  The blog-o-sphere has debated whether Eric Wedge, let alone Jack Zduriencik, were oblivious to all the state-of-the-art data that is as free as water to threm.  O'Keefe's sparkling interview will put "PAID" to the issue.  Not the existence of the interview itself, but the specific content of it.  Read the article!

....

In the abstract, a lynch mob's response might be, "But how do we know Zduriencik uses his analysts?"

Read the article!

....

What are they talking about, "Hit F/X data"?  This is the kind of stuff that measures MPH off a hitter's bat, angle of spray, and so forth.   Internally, they'll have data measuring quickness of swing launch.  The M's data is vastly better than ours, and they use it.  They have, for many years.

Is 'White House Down' worth your time?

Remember when I said that it seemed like White House Down was just like Olympus Has Fallen? No? Well, I definitely did. The two films came out earlier this year, within a few months of each other, and while I really liked Olympus, I just didn't see the point in spending more money to see it remade. I was kind of wrong. These two movies are just different enough, and I saw them far enough apart, that the similarities weren't a huge issue for me.

Help find this soldier's dog in the Seattle area!

When 1st Lt. Brandon Harker returned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord after being deployed in Afghanistan, he was looking forward to reuniting with his yellow lab Oakley. He had left Oakley with people that he thought were his friends. But it turns out that they sold Oakley on Craigslist a few months ago.

Please help reunite Lt. Harker with Oakley. He is a yellow lab with distinctive dark spots all over his body, and was sold on Craigslist in the Seattle area some time in the last few months.

Struggling for women’s rights across Asia

The rights of women are one aspect of our world that has undergone a change for the better over the course of the last few centuries.  The teachings of religious dogma and the entrenchment of patriarchal governmental structures have been the chief enemies, but one by one the people of the world are making it known that they desire change.  A more modern society means more humanistic views, which in turn means treating women with the same respect that men have historically demanded.  This is not to say that the state of women’s rights is perfect by any means, but some places are distinctivel
