The Shield is Mightier than the Sword ...

.

Tom Brady, after losing to Manning in the AFC Championship, looked relaxed and happy in the postgame.  We remarked in the living room, wow, that looks like a guy who knew he couldn't win this game.  There wasn't much pressure on him, because he was resigned to the outcome all week.  Or so it says here.

That night, it was clear why.  The 2013 Broncos, says Brady, "have probably the best offense in NFL history."

Bear in mind that:

  • This was Brady-Manning XV, and they're both old, so it's legacy time
  • Brady had won like 14 of the previous 14 games
  • Brady has 5 Super Bowls to Manning's 1 ...
  • ... so he can coast in from here, to a much greater legacy than Manning has

You gotta understand that Larry Bird did not praise the Lakers highly.  Not while they were still playing, anyway.  Can you imagine Bird saying, in 1984, wow.  The Lakers are unbeatable.  Or can you imagine LeBron James losing a series to Kevin Durant and saying, "It's his league now."  Never happen.

For Tom Brady to offer that statement, was a lot like Roberto Duran saying "No Mas" ... if Duran had been ahead on rounds 8-2 at the time.  If that happened, then something very, very weird occurred in that 11th round.

POTD Scott Baker, RHP

.

Q.  Scott Baker?!  Is he still alive?

A.  Ron Shandler sez,

"Perennial elbow issues shelved him back in summer 2011; he finally returned, to start a few games down the stretch.  When healthy, he can be counted on for fine CMD (that's walk rate - Jeff) and lots of fly balls.

"xERA history says an ERA around 4.00 is about right.  If you feel like gambling, he makes an intriguing STASH (meaning, stow him deep on your roster IN CASE he goes on a run - Jeff) but beware the extreme risk.

"$4"

.

Q.  He used to be really good, right?

A.  He used to be really good, wrong.   For a while he used to cobble 3 WAR per season ... how you get credited with 3.9 WAR while getting blasted for 1.3 homers a game and running a 4.37 ERA, I'm not sure.

... This article is headed toward a major crash and burn, I know.  Look, I cannot stand to watch Scott Baker pitch, any more than I could Joe Saunders.  But objectively speaking he's a good #4 starter.  He wins ugly.

New trailer alert: 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman'

I don't know about you guys, but one of the animated movies I'm most looking forward to in 2014 is Mr. Peabody & Sherman. I loved the Mr. Peabody segments from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show as a child, so when they announced a major motion picture based on this super intelligent, witty pup, I was thrilled. Now, at long last, we have another full trailer for the film - and it's adorable!

Bad Crafts: Tying decorative knots

This is a craft that is not so much "bad" as "baffling." The thing about decorative knots is that they are cool and all, but then what? How many decorative knots does a person need?

The art of tying decorative knots has a long history, there are decorative knots that date back to the Celts, to the ancient Chinese, and the Austro-Hungarian empire of the 18th century. You had to make your own fun back then.

Review: Community - ‘Basic Intergluteal Numismatics’

As Community continues its struggle to redeem itself after a rather mediocre season 4, they bring us ‘Basic Intergluteal Numismatics’, a crime-drama look at the horrible results of ass-cracking - i.e.: dropping a quarter in someone’s butt crack while they’re bent over.  And while this episode does have some laughs and more than a few clever tricks, I wouldn’t say it’s one of the stronger installments in the series as a whole.

Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2013)

Why, oh why did I decide that it would be worth two-and-a-half hours of my life to watch the MichaelBay abortion known as Transformers: Dark of the Moon?  I mean, I didn’t like the first two flicks, so what possessed me?  Possession - yes, that must be the answer.  Some sort of demon must have ravaged my soul and forced me into submission.  As you can probably tell by now, my viewing experience wasn’t exactly the greatest.

Cano at the WBC

.

"Suspect what it is?  How can it not know what it IS?!" - Harrison Ford, Blade Runner, after interviewing a Replicant

...

Once the ESPN New York Network began to fear that Cano might actually leave ... one of the talking heads said something that stopped me short.  It suddenly seemed possible.

Verducci, was it?  In a resigned, somber tone, he admitted that when he watched Robinson Cano at the WBC --- > "I saw a completely different player there."

Cano didn't say much about it, but he (evidently) disliked being in Derek Jeter's shadow, disliked being an afterthought with the Yankees.  I mean, you remember how Shaq and Kobe never got along in LA; truly great athletes come with self-images to match.  You don't get to be as good as Michael Jordan, and not know how good you are.

When a player is [by far the best player in a locker room], he is seldom comfortable with being viewed as anything other than [the best player in the locker room].

Have you seen the Yankee WAR leaders from 2013?!  Cano has like 6+ and then everybody else has 1+.  I think Gardner slid in with 2-something, but, Brett Gardner.
