M's 5, Twins 8

.

Try to capture the flavor of the James Paxton start tonight?

Hmmm ... it used to be popular to say stuff like "Dante Bichette is only the 6th player in history to have three straight seasons of 110 RBI and 8 outfield assists."  Nowadays you don't see it much.  But if you tried to do it with K-Pax tonight?  Maybe like "the 3rd Mariner pitcher since Hargrove to get KO'ed after 4 IP despite 7 K's and one hard-hit ball"?

No.  Watching the game tonight was like --- > watching a Randy Johnson start from 1990.  GLS said "the game was hard to watch."  Just so!  EVERY at-bat was hard to watch in 1990, because The Big Unit was just this close to wiping them out in a holocaust.  But he'd walk 5 guys on 3-2 counts and give up two seeing-eye singles in the 5th to lose the game.

Same thing with Paxton.  The Twins couldn't get wood on the ball, but ... errors and seeing-eye grounders and more errors and then, maybe a centered pitch and ... maddening.

Make Yours Italian

There are few cuisines that feel more American than Italian food. And when that food is made by the best in the kitchen, it can be a truly remarkable dining experience. Here are three Italian restaurants that the people of Austin consider to be the best. Taverna by Lombardi is one spot to check out. The atmosphere is charming yet hip and creates the perfect environment for both eating and a romantic date. For someplace that is good for either an elegant date or a casual one, head to Botticelli’s.

Quick Prescriptions

.

Carlos Quentin moves in front of Jesus Montero because --- > his last 145 OPS+ season was 2013.  Not 2009.  If you're okay with Rickee Weeks, much less Jason Bay and Corey Hart and those guys, you're okay with Carlos Quentin.

Jack Z called it a "no-brainer" and said that baseball is always in flux.  Meaning:  you and I cannot project Carlos Quentin after 18 months off* and then 3 weeks in AAA, but Jack Z can.  Or maybe he can.  Kendrys Morales ... it's too soon after the pain.

Nelson Cruz hit a deep, low line drive to LF to knock in the first run.  From 275 feet away, it was hit so hard that Colby Rasmus could not catch it.  That's Mike Blowers' opinion, not just mine.  The little muff resulting, meant no play at the plate against Austin Jackson.

Jeff Sullivan pointed out that Cruz is swinging at a MUCH higher angle this year.  Sully is right.  It's reflected in Cruz' weird flyball/popup ratio and it is reflected in the CF camera.

In reverse chrono order, the Shout Box sed:

GLSI wonder if Divish or Shannon Drayer could find out if that's something the Mariners track as well.3 hours 9 min ago
SABR MattLeone is missing by like 18" per pitch, BTW3 hours 53 min ago
SABR MattThe Yankees track that stat, FWIW. They have interns watching the game footage and recording estimates of how far the catcher's glove moves between set-up and catch. The average SP in MLB misses the glove by roughly 11 inches per pitch...command artists like Hamels and Lee miss by 5-6 inches and I'd guess that, right now, Walker is missing by 14-16" per pitch.3 hours 54 min ago

GLSWith Walker, I'm curious how well he's able to hit the target that Zunino gives him. How many times in a game does Zunino set up and not have to move his glove to grab the ball? When I watch an at bat, I'm trying to be more aware of this myself, but it's not something I'm tracking throughout any given game.

Taijuan's "spikeball" is missing by 30", but at least it's a 30" vertically....

When SSI first called this pitch a "spikeball" we weren't trying to evoke images of Karch Kiraly and volleyball.  Like we sez, it's gotta be nerves.  Taijuan has thrown well in the past, and he's thrown well in the majors in the past.  The first two starts were greatly annoying but do not change who Taijuan is.

...

The two stats we've always wished for are (1) catcher's glove movement and (2) batter's reaction in-between-ness…  Until those two stats are publicly available, local shlubs will keep their jobs on the interwebs, it seems ...
