Did You Know … ?

.

Moe Dawg's recent golf/baseball analysis has been among the best he's ever done.  We just haven't had a chance to follow on yet (and still don't).  Personally, I've had about four "aha" experiences off his golf instruction.

At age 51, let's say we were all in school, the K-12 system.  You'd be in grade 17, but Mo and Dr. D would be in like grade 45.  Think about it.  ;- )

Not often that Dr. D gets a Zen insight -- totally basic, fundamental, and to which he was completely oblivious.  For him it is one of the joys of baseball.

........

Mo' talked about "trapping" the ball on a sand shot, for example, which I think of as "huddling over" it, smothering it, or whatever.  In aikido it's very simple:  extend your "ki" down the centerline to infinity.  In baseball they do talk about "staying through the ball."  But we suspect that Moe is thinking about more than that, when he talks about a sand shot.  Maybe we need to get to a course :- )

This idea about "mis-hitting" balls, even if you clock the same velocity off the clubhead?!  Moe sez it's the difference between 290 and 265 yards off the tee, and that it is the difference between Justin Smoak and Logan Morrison.  He's got our attention.

........

Whoa! Have the M's Stopped Throwing Away Felix' Masterpieces?

.

So the Kansas City Royals had won +10 games IN. A. ROW. before they ran into the 250-HP woodchipper that is Safeco Field.*  And then we demonstrated to The Resurrected John Lackey (TM) that his 2.50 ERA had been fake all along.

You watch the Mariners play, and they don't physically LOOK like they're on pace for 87-91 wins** and a playoff spot.  No way no how.

NYC Famous Faces - Woody Allen

#3-4 Starters

The 2014 Mariners sport a shiny, teamwide ERA+ of 114.  As we're sure you've noticed, this is because:

  • Roenis Elias has jumped from AA to give us 15 (!) starts at a 3+ ERA
  • Chris Young has jumped out of his world-famous San Diego Pool to give us 13 stats at a 3+ ERA

Those two items boast mightily of Jack Zduriencik's ability to cobble a 25-man roster out of a set of preseason question marks.  (It would take only a single SP swapout before the 2014 Mariners were able to match the ERA+ of the 2001 Mariners who won 116 games).

.

Roenis Elias

Since he started throwing the changeup "dead fish," dropping on the outer half of the plate, and started throwing the Bedard Curve to break out of the zone, has become one of the most talented SP's in the whole of Mariner history.

MtGrizzly pointed out that he has remarkable physical balance.  He was right.  Elias stumbled on the idea of a Japanese "pause at the top," to break up hitters' timing -- and he simply performed it in his next game.  Late innings, no less, when he should have been tired.

James used to say, show me any young lefty, and I'll look at his balance at the top, and I'll tell you right then whether he will be a big-league pitcher.  If he's got no body control, he's got no plus command, and he's got no chance.
