Goodbye to print books?

Occasionally at my health club I see people reading while doing various things. Mostly the books seen are print ones. However, there also are a number of Kindles in evidence as well. According to this article, they are part of a rising trend. One that (supposedly) witnessed 43 percent of Americans read an eBook in 2011. This is all well and good, because reading is still reading, be it a paperback or an eBook on a Kindle.

Dairy industry trying to hide presence of aspartame from consumers

I know that I like to bitch about everything that’s wrong with the food industry, but this latest development coming through the news is one that people should really know about, especially if they drink milk.  In an attempt to keep concerned consumers from knowing about the presence of questionably healthy sugar alternatives, the dairy industry is trying to get the FDA to redefine “milk” to include any artificial sweeteners added.  They do this so that they will not have to advertise, as is required now, that they use aspartame or sucralose in their products.

Getting hooked on unhealthy foods

The more I learn, the more I become scared of the food that I ingest on a daily basis.  If it’s not tainted meat brain disease and GMO rat tumors, it’s the way the food industry manages to get away with so much without having to inform us, the people who eat the food, of what may or may not be healthy.  It doesn't make sense to me that cigarettes, which are consumed by only a small portion of the population, require warnings on the packs while food, which is consumed by everyone, does not.

When you think of a Nordic winter afternoon, "Good time for a baby to take a nap outside" may not be the first thought to spring to mind. But this is not just a tradition in Nordic countries, it's practically an institution. To the extent that many parents are surprised that parents in other countries WOULDN'T put their babies outside to sleep.

E-cigs: Exchanging smoke for vapor

I am currently undergoing a mighty struggle in my life: The quest to quit smoking.  Many around the world, and perhaps some reading this right now, are sharing this experience with me.  My own desire in quitting is to improve the state of my health, but we all have different reasons.  Unfortunately, the transition from smoker to non-smoker isn't an easy one.

Should Christian corporations be exempt from Obamacare?

Bill Keller's column in the NYTimes today explores the question of: "Can a corporation have a conscience?" It's his way of asking whether corporations, meaning any business with 50 or more employees, will win their suit to opt out. Can a corporation choose what parts of government programs to accept and enforce? Can a corporation deny certain birth control options if the owner is driven by religious opinions?
