India’s Plans to Join U.S. in Unmonitored Surveillance

With all the recent stink in the news about the United States performing less-than-legal surveillance on its citizens, it seems only natural that other countries would want to get in on a good thing, right?  India is one of those countries and, as it turns out, has been for a few years now.  A plan has been underway for a while that allows many Indian government agencies to monitor citizens free of any outside influence or regulation.

Lebowski Fest

Some people think that the Japanese are pretty weird for some of the celebrations that they have, but they really have nothing on the United States when it comes to obscure culture worship.  Take, for example, the Lebowski Fest.  Similar to, but completely unlike, conventions that celebrate cultural phenomena like Star Wars or Star Trek, this one revolves around taking part in Dude-like activities inspired by the film The Big Lebowski.

U.S. Military Build-up in Asia Creates Some Tension

The region of East Asia has plenty of problems when it comes to balancing the various military powers in the region, whether strong or just completely unstable.  China is building up their military and throwing their weight around in order to secure more territory.  North Korea is doing what they do best and making loud threats of nuclear retaliation against anyone who even looks at them wrong.  Now, the United States may be getting further involved in the build-up, a move that has China a bit peeved.

Shelf Unbound and what to read next in independent publishing

One of the great trends I'm seeing in the publishing world is that people who have spent decades in the publishing industry are venturing out on their own and building innovative new companies. She writes on their About page:

Run Denver Run

Not only is running one of the best ways to explore a new city, but choosing a race in a new city is the perfect excuse to travel and compete in a new environment, demographic and state. Run Seattle Run traveled to Denver for the Colfax Half Marathon, part of the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon series, which featured a weekend of races along Colfax Avenue, Downtown Denver and Colfax Avenue.

Choosing sides in Syria

The conflict in Syria has been going on for more than two years now and still the nations of the world have yet to come to any sort of decision regarding involvement in the civil war.  Though almost all universally agree that President Bashar Assad should end his regime and try to work out some sort of compromise with the rebels for a new government, how to go about this is the main issue.

Seven amazing castles in the United States

Normally, when one thinks of great and beautiful castles, one thinks of places well outside the borders of the United States and probably well outside the entirety of both North and South America.  The “New World” isn't exactly an area that had to deal with all of the trials of the medieval world.  Warfare was quite different back in the day and the need for great walls and giant stone structures wasn't necessary among the early populations of our two continents.

Jason Collins becomes first openly gay active athlete

At 34 years of age, Jason Collins finds himself in an interesting spot. After finishing last season with the Washington Wizards via a trade from the Boston Celtics, Collins is now a free agent. Standing at 7 feet tall, Collins has been in the league since 2001. He was drafted 18th overall in the 2001, after being named an All-American at Stanford University. He was part of the New Jersey Nets first ever NBA Finals berth in 2002, and after 2008 season became somewhat of a journeyman.
