A message to the UN on Syria

The war in Syria has been ongoing for more than two years now.  As the months pass and the body count increases, the United Nations has, unsuccessfully, been trying to think of something they can do to help.  The majority of countries seem to be in favor of helping the rebels in the conflict, but most attempts at action on that front have been blocked by Russia and China, who are backing President Assad.  But as the time stretches on the ability of the many organizations dedicated to providing

New Jersey’s Greystone Asylum

For those looking to do a little urban exploration in one of the creepiest places on Earth, have a look at the New JerseyStateHospital for the Insane.  Also known as the New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum at Morristown (due to it being located at MorrisPlains), this site is probably best known as GreystonePark.  This nickname it received soon after its construction due to the grey stone used t

Seriously people, stop tanning!

Tanning continues to be a popular pastime among Americans, which is pretty alarming, given that it can literally kill you. That "healthy glow" can lead to melanoma, and in the last few years, the rate of melanoma cases has skyrocketed a whopping 800 percent among women ages 18-39. A. J. Jacobs, "Drop Dead Healthy"

"Stunt journalism" has gotten a bad rap, but when done right, it can be extremely entertaining. What Jacobs brings to the table is a finely-wrought balance of neuroticism, humor and compulsive honesty. His books are always an entertaining read, and Drop Dead Healthy is no exception. For this project, he spent two years getting as healthy as possible, from head to toe. But how do you determine what's the healthiest thing to do? Well, exactly.

Don't freak out, but stress is killing you

The news about stress is so bad, it's hard to think of something stress isn't responsible for. And that's part of the problem: Sometimes I feel like "stress" is an all-purpose explanation for disease and ill health that basically amounts to "blame the victim." Because after all, if you are stressed, it's your own fault and it's your problem to fix. ARGH HOW STRESSFUL.

EPA automobile regulations will hit drivers in the pocket book

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency has been working to decrease dangerous emissions from gasoline and engines slowly through a tiered approach. The agency recently released its requirements for tier 3, and while it will be a boon for the environment, not so for the average consumer.

Male DNA found in female brains may provide health benefits

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle have found that female brains often contain male DNA. The study found that male DNA is transferred to females during pregnancy and can travel to the brain. This process, called microchimerism, happens when mothers and their fetuses exchange cells and other genetic material. The study examines women with and without Alzheimer's disease to try to determine whether the male DNA provides health benefits to the females.
