Been out of the loop for a bit, so sorry for bringing up old #News... But why is everyone lumping Bass going to #Japan like it was part of the original trade? That makes no sense, this is a totally separate situation. And from everything I have read about the situation, Bass pretty much had a guaranteed spot in the M's pen and HE asked for his release... Dipoto did him a solid and granted it... how does that have anything to do with the original trade? My assumption is Bass sees his time slipping away and wants to be a starter so he is trying to go the Colby Lewis route... don't forget he and Lewis were teammates last year...

Something seems weird about the Oh deal... And the Korean signings this winter in general... They have all gotten way less than expected, and one guy we were talking about signing didn't even get signed at all... seems #Strange after all the recent KBO and #Japan successes... Even for the cardinals this didn't get much pub, and feels more like a "pile of bullpen spaghetti" signing than a, "Hey look we just got a great new closer" signing... Makes me wonder what the GM's know that we don't. It's not like all the GM's are colluding together so the Cardinals could get a good deal...

Lazarita will be free agent in mid February.
Any chance the Mariners try to sign him??

Reply - SABR Matt - 1/11/16 7:24pm

No. The Mairners haven't been in on a Cuban. Ever. Not since Yuni Betancourt. And that was a light investment. This bidding will turn fierce...and there's essentially no chance at all that the Mariners have the stomach for it.

sigh...I'd much rather have had Oh at 11 M/2yr than Cishek. :(

Reply - KingBC - 1/11/16 2:21pm

Couldn't agree more. OH ended up with a 1yr 5 million deal and a team option for a 2nd year. Why we are paying Cishek more than that for multiple seasons, or at least couldn't just add OH also for so cheap irritates me.

I put essentially zero relevance to winter league stats...they're on the same level as "so and so is in the best shape of his life!" articles in ST.

Bill James Handbook predicts .264/.317/.385/.702 for Martin. If he's getting a few more walks, all the better. DWL isn't MLB, but running 20% walks and just under 20% Ks means he seeing the ball pretty well - and 4 of his Ks were in his first 4 games and he has 8 walks in his last 6 games, so he's maybe settling in.

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/10/16 5:24pm

Help me out, those percentages in order? Is that avg. Slugging, what else and what's the order

Reply - Bat571 - 1/10/16 6:15pm

Triple slash is BA/OBP/SLG, with OPS as the 4th item.

Reply - SABR Matt - 1/11/16 5:36am

I believe the James handbook projections are essentially the favorite toy/marcel. In other words, he just takes the last three years, rolls them into an average, weights a bit toward most recent seasons, makes an age adjustment and that is it. Statistically has a slightly worse verification record than BPs 50th percentiles, but methodologically, is heavily...heavily dis-recommended in the case of a player going through changes or a player who has not established a level of baseline performance that an exec would deem trustworthy for analysis at this level.

That is to say...the James projection assumes that 2013-2014 are the normal...I'm not prepared to make that assumption.

Leonys Martin is really doing well in the Dominican round-robin playoffs (he only played 1 game in the regular DWL schedule). Batting 2nd for Tigres de Licey, he's hitting in the .340s and the Tigres are 11-1. The winter leagues are not MLB, but it looks like his hand problem may be behind him.
They don't have a listing for playoff stats, but it appears from totaling from box scores that he's 14 for 41 (.341) with 4 2B, 11 walks and 10 Ks, 11 runs scored, and 4 RBIs. That gives a .341/.480/.439/.919 line. Even 100 points off each would give a league average OPS (.719) from a CF. We can hope. But just playing 12 games in 15 days and hitting (and walking) steadily shows something.

Mariner prospect Kyle Petty is not only leading the Aussie Winter League in HRs, he's second in SBs!

Forgot about that aspect. ..unless his contact grants him free agency that's s nice bonus

Something extra I noticed with Cook is while he'd be arbitration eligible, he'd also be controlled through 2018 if useful that long. Potentially 3 years of cheap production.

I actually like the Cook signing rather well. I presume he would not have signed without a significant examination of his injured shoulder. If the team feels he can pitch at anywhere close to his pre injury levels, he could be a low cost major add.

Dr. D started fretting about the 0 degree situation, looked around the net, and became moderately less worried. Article up on the #Football blog FYI :- )

Sorry my copy-and paste lost the formatting, but its from a red-bordered box at the top of the page and I need to copy quickly to paste it in shout. Took me multiple tries.

Also errors shown in header: Notice: Undefined index: und in _shouts_to_conversations_finish_conversation() (line 776 of /home/klat/public_html/sites/all/modules/custom/shouts_to_conversations/shouts_to_conversations.module).

Since I'm still having issues with CPU demand and "long-running-script" errors, I'm prepping my shouts in notepad, then cutting and pasting immediately after clicking recover web-page, so that the paste and submit work before the errors start again. Could it be I'm not waiting long enough on the page reload to have my account recognized?

My shout on Bastardo earlier. Having problems again with flaky logins - says I'm successful, has the logout button, but I don't get the black bar and I show up as anonymous on shouts.

Anyway, if Furbush isn't right, there is a real problem in the BP beyond just several guys needing bouncebacks. Even if Zych continues and Benoit settles in as expected, there is a lack of a 7th-8th inning LH who also can get RH out. Bastardo would fill that spot perfectly - almost a Rhodes-Nelson pair with Benoit.

The 'Kuma signing puts them higher on the budget than they apparently wanted to be, but Bastardo, by solidifying roles and being another alternate closer, would go a long was to letting everybody settle in in April and May, rather than depending on Furbush, Zych, and Scribner to be fully in gear at the opener.

Since Drayer highlighted the Ms interest in Bastardo earlier, but he's not signed yet, one has to conclude there's still opportunity knocking there.

Looking at his bref page, he had... a pretty rough 2015 season. Woof.

Looks like they signed Ryan Cook to a 1 year major league deal. I don't know anything about the guy...

If you could get Bastardo for 2+Option / 10+incentives, I'm all over that stuff like a fat man at the buffet. I should know...I'm pretty fat and I do love the buffet. That would be a very large step toward legitimizing the bullpen.

Ms release Bass so he can go to #Japan. I wonder if this is the opening shot in the moves to finish the BP. The interest in Antonio Bastardo that Shannon Drayer reported back at Winter Meetings time may still be there.

AB wants what Sipp got -3/$18M - but the Ms might prefer something like 2/$10 from what it sounds like. But no other team has stepped up with a 3rd year, so maybe JD has some maneuvering room.

Then sign another couple of vets (Beimel?, Aardsma?, ???) to minors/NRI deals and see where things sit. But Zych and Scribner, then Benoit and Bastardo, then Cishek sounds like a pretty nice 7-8-9 combo here. Then there's room for Nuno or #Montgomery for long work and Furbush if he's right. Could do worse.

GREAT News, about The Kid! Should have been unanimous... but oh well... also... GREAT news that the new set of electors REALLY jumped up EDGAR's vote as well! Hopefully he makes it in soon!
Here's a good article about it all: <a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/14521041/five-things-learned-2016-hall... target="_parent">http://espn.go.com/m...
