All nuts are not created equal

When it comes to nuts, there are a lot of different options. Not just the type of nut, but the preparation style. Do you want a healthy snack? Or just a salty, greasy, highly-flavored low-carb treat? And how do you feel about "scroop"?

"Scroop" is the wonderful and amazing word that describes the texture of damp silk, corn starch, and nuts like hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, and macadamia nuts. That weird crunch that some people (myself included) love. But for others, it's like fingernails on a blackboard.

What not to eat during the government shutdown

We have one of the worst food safety records in the developed world. In the wake of the government shutdown, FDA food inspections have been suspended, and the nation-wide network for reporting outbreaks of food-borne illness (which triggers food recalls) is closed. As little work as the FDA does at the best of times (they are only able to inspect 2% of the food being imported into the country when they are working at full speed), the closure of FDA inspections could end up being disastrous for American health.

What is it about the sandwich that makes it such a common symbolic pawn in the gender wars? From the misogynistic "make me a sandwich" Sad Man Brigade, to this new story about a man who agreed to marry his girlfriend if she made him 300 sandwiches. I feel bad for the sandwich. It's not the sandwich's fault that we keep using them as the central metaphor in truly ugly conversations.

6 foods to eat for better dental health

Obviously sweets and high-acid foods (like orange juice and Coke) are bad for your teeth. But what should you add to your diet if you want to boost your dental health?

1. Cheese
Cheese contains calcium, which is good for your teeth. But it also contains the milk protein casein, which can help improve the surface of your teeth and make them more resistant to cavities.

Pigs helping ponies!

Every year the famous New Forest ponies of southern England face a health crisis. Acorns fall to the ground in huge numbers, tempting the ponies into eating them. But the acorns will make the ponies sick.

What to do? Release pigs into the forest to eat all the acorns first, before the ponies can get to them! At the end of acorn season the happy pigs are rounded up and returned to their owners. Win-win!
