Movie review: '12 Years a Slave'

At long last, I can tell you with certainty that 12 Years a Slave is one of the best movies of the year, and one of the best historical films I've ever seen. I can also tell you that hours later, as I'm sitting here typing, I'm still overwhelmed with emotion. I've seen a lot of depressing movies in my day, but I've never been hit so hard as I was sitting in that tiny theater. I was so overwhelmed, I didn't even shed tears until the final credits rolled.

Paragon Casino Resort

Just a little over three hours northwest of New Orleans is another resort and casino to consider for a weekend getaway.  Located within Marksville, the Paragon Casino Resort is a nice resort with a distinctive Louisiana charm to it, including a lobby filled with live alligators.  Spend some time relaxing in the indoor heated pool or enjoy some casual time at the movie theater or the arcade.  There’s a good selection of restaurants and bars to spend time at and, of course, a spa and live entertainment on a

Uncertain, Texas

In eastern Texas, at the corner of Louisiana and Arkansas, is a tiny town of 150 people called Uncertain.  This amazing little town is as interesting as its name, as it’s a Texas wetland on the CaddoLake that covers more than 32,000 acres.  Bayous and water channels meander for miles and for couples looking for a tiny bit of paradise, this may be just the spot.  Take your loved one out on the water and either canoe or tour the

Laura Plantation

Just west of New Orleans, right up on the Mississippi river is the old Laura Plantation.  For couples that like to know more about the history of their state, this is a great place to get some insight into the often harsh way that things used to be.  You can tour the plantation estate and surrounding buildings, inside and out, and learn all about life on the plantation.  Learn about the people who lived and died there, from the family to the slaves.  And discover more about Creole traditions.  For an eye-opening look

Watch a stand of trees disappear into a Louisiana sinkhole

Check out this video of a stand of trees disappearing into a sinkhole in a Louisiana bayou. The video is crazy, and the back-story is worse: this is the result of a collapsing salt dome which was caused by a Houston company that drilled in too far (and is in the process of being fined by the state). The sinkhole has been eating up property in Assumption parish, where many people have already had to be relocated.

Fontainebleau State Park

If you’re in or around Mandeville, you might want to check out Fontainebleau State Park during your next date or singles event. It’s in St. Tammany Parish and although it used to be a sugar plantation, now it’s the home of dozens of varieties of birds to produce sweet songs for a free natural concert during your date. There’s plenty of camping to be had at the park, as well as a playground, hiking trails, fishing, a beach and much more. Have you ever visited this favorite Louisiana outdoor area with someone special or on your own? Tell us all about how it went.

Grand Isle State Park

Although it has been ravaged by hurricanes in the past, Grand Isle State Park is continually repaired and enjoyed by people all over Louisiana each and every time. One of the most popular activities for singles to do at the park is to sunbathe, and what better excuse is there to hold someone close than to help with some sun block or tanning lotion? You can also take your lady or man fishing, boating, camping or bird watching at the beach. Have you ever hung out at Grand Isle State Park with your date before? If so, tell us about it below.

Fandom Crafts: True Blood mittens

Ravelry user Juliane Westwingpudding has created a wonderful knitting pattern for stranded colorwork mittens featuring the logo of Tru Blood, the faux blood product featured in the show and book series True Blood. You might not need Scandinavian mittens in Louisiana, but these are great for those of us living in more northerly climes.

Jimmie Davis State Park

Did you know that Louisiana only has 22 state parks? One of these is Jimmie Davis State Park, named after a former governor, singer and film star of the area. There’s no prettier place in Louisiana for glowing pink sunsets than on the Caney Lake Reservoir. People come for miles just to fish in the area, and you can certainly do that on your date as well. There’s also lots of space to hike and explore together if you just want some time outdoors alone with your fella or lady. Ever visted Jimmie Davis State Park? Tell us about your adventures there.
