Congrats DaddyO. At least you'll have no more #Football to annoy you? I recommend a good chess #Book on the Accelerated Dragon maybe?

Reply - anonymous - 1/18/16 6:14pm

My wife and I were in the hospital room watching the game on this ridiculously tiny standard def TV. Of course the Hawks were being destroyed in a manner we have never seen before. The doctor walked in, and from there we didn't see much.

In high school I dabbled in chess, but quickly figured out I just didn't have the kind of intelligence to master it. I could beat people who didn't know what they were doing, but I couldn't stay interested in the abstract discussions and learning the technical skills necessary to become a devotee.

Thanks Doc!

Reply - jemanji - 1/19/16 5:40pm

Don't be so hard on yourself about the chess venture amigo ... the vast majority of chess players consider it more of a training issue than an IQ issue, like music ... and starting very young is massive for that reason ... 'tis like learning a language; lots of folks in other countries speak 4,5 languages but they're like "how does that horsey move again?"

We'll keep you in our prayers DaddyO and look forward to your articles on your medical challenges!

Thanks for the kind words friends. Sunday morning here, no episodes in the last thirty hours. Finally got some sleep. Feeling much better than yesterday.

DaddyO, great #News! Thank God for His grace! Praying for all of your family!!! RockiesJeff

Reply - anonymous - 1/18/16 6:05pm

Thanks, Rockies Jeff. I truly, truly appreciate your prayers, and yes, God has been gracious to me.

DaddyO - sorry for your trauma my friend. So glad to hear that your #Health and family are intact. Hope you can drop a word or two from the hospital room. If not, be well! Jeff

Reply - anonymous - 1/18/16 6:02pm

Thanks, Jeff. It was a blessing to be surrounded in the cramped Urgent Care and again in my hospital room by my wife, our younger daughter with her husband and our 4 week old first grandchild, our older daughter in her 8th month of pregnancy with her husband, and our son. I may actually post an article about what happened.

God Speed, Daddy! Prayers for you from #Oregon! You and I remember the '79 Pirates: Like them, here at SSI "We are Family!" We're all thinking about you. And if you're up for a bit of #Humor, your de-fib device is 3 for 3 in save opportunities. Beats Rodney, doesn't it? :) Hang in there. Keep us posted as you can.

Reply - anonymous - 1/18/16 5:56pm

Thanks, moe. The fact that I had an instinct to share this experience with people here confirms what you say about the sense of "family" here. I consider all of you my friends...even those who liked Jack Zduriencik!!!

Re: 3 for 3 in saves, that's a GOOD one! We don't need no stinkin' blown saves in THIS ball game.

I will probably post an update tomorrrow, perhaps even an article.

Yikes...what is the cause of that arrhythmia, DaddyO? I'll say a few prayers tonight for your recovery. :\

Reply - anonymous - 1/18/16 5:51pm

The way it was explained to me:

A: In 2002 I had a heart attack that left a third of my heart nothing but dead tissue, most on the left side, the side that has the pumping strength. I have lived with very low heart function since.

B: There are electrical nodes on the heart that control the timing (rhythm) of contraction by various parts of the heart. In order for the heart to act as a pump, those timings have to be in rhythm.

C: On Friday the dead tissue "influenced" (don't ask me to explain that) rogue heart cells to sporadically send out rogue signals that conflict with the normal rhythm. Occasional rogue firings are not that big a deal (so I am told), but when they come in a flurry they so foul the rhythm that the heart can no longer pump. You literally drop instantly with sudden cardiac arrest.

There's probably people here who can explain it much more clearly, but that's the gist of it.

DaddyO checking briefly from a hospital bed. Had an interesting day yesterday to say the least. I have had an implanted defibrillator for twelve years, never came into play until yesterday. Dropped "dead" from sudden cardiac arrhythmia, three times. Thankfully the device worked as intended each time. Had entire family at my bedside all day. Thankfully, the God of grace did not call me home. Thought I would share this with my SSI friends. Not out of the woods yet, but no events so far today.

NFL shtick on the #Football blog. Chip Kelly and Colin Kaepernick: what could go wrong?

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/17/16 11:25am

Yea. Must be staying in town his..kap..jersey sales went from 79.99 back up to 99.99.

So that officially closes the off-season (other than a few NRI's perhaps)...arbitration successfully avoided.

Jokestar

According to both Drayer and Dutton, the M's have agreed to one year deals with Furbush and Scribner.

4.15 Mil...way more than I was hoping we'd have to pay for Martin. He'll be too expensive to even keep in 2017. If he's even remotely productive, we'll need to trade him.

Reply - OBF - 1/15/16 2:22pm

He already took a 600k pay cut... what were you expecting? I am surprised he didn't get at least a little bump to 5 mil or so... so good for JeDi to get him to take a pay cut at all... I am sure if they had gone to arbitration they would have given him at least 5 mil...

Line-up optimization is a waste of time...but I suspect that was your point...giving the sabermetrics professor some busywork to stop his complaining about boredom are we? :)

Reply - anonymous - 1/17/16 4:12pm

You got me :D

From MLBTR: Mariners center fielder Leonys Martin has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $4.15MM, tweets Jon Heyman. Swartz’s model pegged him to repeat his $3.75MM salary on the heels of a poor 2015 campaign, though Martin’s playing time netted him a slight bump with his new team.

I started thinking about that #11 pick coming up and figured there may be some mock drafts to start looking at. The first several I found had the Mariners selecting pitchers, which seemed pretty boring to me.

http://www.draftsite...

baseballkid31 on this site has them taking Michael "Buddy" Reed out of the University of Florida. Several have him going higher but I figured it's all something to think about for the bored. Even seems like DiPotos type of player.

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/15/16 5:21pm

I agree going pitcher atleast. Some to be hopeful for, but def need to sure up rotation still and get depth

Admin...is there a way to get the Mariners to make some roster moves so I'm not so bored? :)

Admin.. Is there a way to fit this site to my #Mobile...it usually is, and if I go to..say tab 3 it fits but on current convo it is not fitting and I must scroll left and right

Reply - anonymous - 1/13/16 5:35pm

+1

More outrageous than the Oh contract is the Maeda one. Most of that one isn't even guaranteed. No MLB pitcher would ever sign that contract.

The KBO is not the NPB. And to be honest, the NPB doesn't have much talent right now either. It's mostly young and club controlled. The prices are simply reflective of that fact and the uncertainty of the talent. Also, the contracts they are getting are anywhere from 2 to 5 times as much as they get at home. Combine that with all the usual Asian-ness and that's the market.

good for JeDi, as well, for quickly giving himself two more fungible and rotatable pieces in Wieland and Cook...both of whom have split contracts and can be sent to AAA as depth.

Also, good for JeDi recognising that one of his players could have a chance to do what he really wants to do and gives him the opportunity to do it even if it conflicts with his own plans. Somehow I don't think JackyZ would have subverted his own plan for the good of another...
