Groveling for Grounders Dept: Winners & Losers

 ............

Last season, we did a series on pitcher Batted Ball MPH.  We finished with a look at which M's pitchers gained, and which lost, in view of the new insights.  Some guys saw their stock go up.  Some not.

Extreme flamethrowing tends to limit MPH off the bat.  So does command, if it is extreeeeeeeme command; we're not talking simple Blake Beavan command here, but Doug Fister command.  Also extreeeeeme change-speed skill, like Vargas'.

M's winners were Paxton, Hultzen, and Taijuan, even more valuable after the MPH discoveries than they were before.  So were Felix and, siigggghhhh, Pineda.  Tom Wilhelmsen, definitely.  Charlie Furbush and Josh Lueke were listed as major losers.

..................

Let's assume, for the moment, that James has a point, and that "pitch to contact" guys are groveling their way to a few mediocre MLB seasons.  By that paradigm, who wins and who loses for the M's?

Yu Go, C.J. - The Bad (for Texas)

=== The Bad (for Texas) ===

I'll tell you what bothers me about the deal.

First roto league I ever played, everything was going great, and about July-August I had a chance to (pretty much) flummox one of the fish owners in the league.

Was going to deal Felix, Carp, Brendan Ryan and Brandon League for six guys I liked better -- a 14 WAR for 17 WAR type trade.  You know, become even farther ahead in the talent war.

I instant-messaged with an older guy who'd won a lot of leagues.  He said, "You're not really thinking of DOING that, are you."

8 Ways To Live Longer In The Sims 3

Unlike most other video games, if your Sim dies, you can't just get another life and start over again at the beginning of the level. But there are a lot of ways around this, depending on what kind of life extension you're looking for.

When choosing a life extension method, ask yourself whether you want to  have more time at each life stage, to be whooshed back to Young Adult, or to have more days tacked onto your given lifespan.

"Aesthetic" Ballplayers

 ................

Terry McDermott says,

I think a huge amount of Ackley's obvious appeal is aesthetic. I know, I know, the data has been run out and it indicates greatness. But what persuades isn't the data here, it's the eye.  The kid looks contemptuous at the plate. Is that all you've got? Really, that's it?

Put him where he belongs, CF, and we can start examining those Dimaggio comps a bit more closely.

That's a good point - that Ackley looks so gorgeous on the field that maybe we're getting skewed a bit.   J.D. Drew maybe somewhat similar, but then again, his healthy year he did get 8.9 WAR...

............

Your Dodgers battled Will the Thrill a time or two, right?  A list of "aesthetic" players would be an interesting one to attack .... hm.

The Progression of Science and Scientists - Archimedes and Ichiro Dept.

  ........

Either this .jpg is a representation of Jack Zduriencik's minor league system, or of Archimedes' electrical generator in reverse - Dr. D

Some of my favorite ancient scientific experiments...

.

Eureka.  Archimedes was asked by a king to determine whether a crown was returned to him as 24K gold, or whether the smith had cheated him.  Archimedes was not to melt down or harm the crown in any way.  A puzzle that, in ancient times, not one Mensa member in a million could have solved.

Sitting in his bathtub, he realized that he could measure the volume of irregular objects through water displacement.  He could then weigh the crown against equal weight of gold in air, and then check both for displacement.

I have a friend who, today, in 2011. works on genetic mapping.  He's smart.  He is not smart enough to figure out things like that.  Neither am I.  Just because you work on amazing 21st-century technology doesn't mean that you are a greater scientist than Archimedes.

....

By the way, Archimedes' "water screw" was slightly revised to develop hydro-electric generators, since you can turn the screw the other way by dropping water into it.  ... It was used in the Netherlands to reclaim land below sea level.  ... it's used in sewage treatment plants because it copes well with solid/liquid mixtures (which may be a parable for blogs that defend low payrolls).  ... they're used in fish hatcheries because they are so gentle on fish.  .. it's used as an agricultural conveyor.  ... etc.

....

What is the "water displacement" of Ichiro's contribution to the Mariners, as opposed to Randy Johnson's?  Thanks to James' RC/27 concept, his Runs per Win concept, his Win Shares paradigm and those who followed him by re-casting these as WAR ...

Early Look at the Sims 3 Unleashed (Pets) Expansion

The next expansion pack is due out this October. (Doesn't that seem like forever from now? Rest assured, you'll turn around and it will be here in the blink of an eye!) This one is their version of Pets, which I know is going to make a lot of hard core Pets fanatics happy. I know of at least two people who have continued to play Sims 2 all this time, just because it offered pets.
