The ever-changing cuisine of Indonesia

Indonesian food is absolutely amazing. In fact, after traveling through almost all of the countries in Southeast Asia (save Vietnam), I can safely say it is some of the best cuisine in the region. While the different dishes are similar to many of their regional counterparts, the specific spices and ingredients that are found on the islands give it a delicious kick. This isn't the only thing that makes Indonesian food so special.

Orioles 2 ...

Q.  Was "Safeco Joe" really that good?  Complete-game four hitter.  Wow.  Felix hasn't thrown a CG.

A.  He wasn't that good, no.

Not taking anything away from him.  He threw an average-solid game -- he executed his own game about average, a shade to the better side of average.  He's done it a hundred times before; he'll probably do it a hundred well, at least thirty or forty times again.

This game was just evening out the law of averages for him.  Bad luck played into the 15 runs he coughed up his last two starts.  Good luck played into this start.

You don't buy that, at first bang of the gavel?  Check his K/BB (2:1) Monday, and his swings and misses (a piddling 4 of them in 105 pitches).  Pathetic.  And no, the 19 grounders weren't a skill -- except that he did have them swinging off the front foot, at pitcher's pitches.  Which is Joe Saunders.

.

Q.  Is the Mainframe worried about his 14 strikeouts against 13 walks?  You can't stay in a rotation with a CTL like that.

Cat apps: No thumbs required

In honor of National Pet Parents Day, which is always the last Sunday in April, I decided to search some apps to see if any of them are cat-friendly. I thought I'd find only apps geared toward cat people (and I, myself, am a cat person), but I was pleasantly surprised. There are actually apps available for your cat to play with. He doesn't even need thumbs.

The 1936 Berlin Olympic Village

In 1936, the Olympic Games were held in the city of Berlin, Germany.  Most people have heard the tale of the legendary Jesse Owens giving the Nazis a little humility.  But what many do not know is that in preparation for this prestigious event, Germany built an entire complex to house and entertain the more than 4000 athletes that would show up to compete.  Today, much of that complex has been either refurbished or destroyed, but many buildings still remain for the curious explorer.

Stretching your dollar far and wide

One of the beauties of traveling outside of the United States is that, depending where you go, the dollar can still stretch far. While the USD doesn't go very far in Europe, and does absolutely nothing in Australia, it still has power pack a day full of activities in places like Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. Here are three great ways to fill your days with activities on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia, without spending more than $30.

Option 1: Surf, sun and spirituality

Trail riding in Mexico’s Guadalupe Valley

Hidden in a tender valley only 20 minutes from the crowds flocking to Baja’s ‘Ruta del vino’ wineries, is the Guest Ranch of La Bellota. The sight is a wonder after a 20-minute, bouncy ride along a dirt road. There are three gates that have to be manually opened. They deter unwanted visitors and keep the horses, cattle and sheep on the 2,800 acres that are tended by Raul Aguiar and Caroline Kane.

Japanese soul food, bento boxes and Ryokan feasts

On a side street in the town of Sakai, a small restaurant sits emblazoned with welcoming banners full of kanji characters. Inside, two low tables are embedded with long, metal warming trays and seat no more than 20. Across the small space, two chefs chop and stir over a low griddle, pouring out round batters of eggy batter filled with seafood, wagu beef and vegetables in various combinations before spreading sauces on top.

Strategies for shopping at international grocery stores

Last weekend I found myself talking to someone about shopping at Uwajimaya, which is the amazing and outstanding Asian grocery store in Seattle. She confessed that she loved the idea of shopping there, but she found the reality to be completely overwhelming. Which is true, but that's part of the appeal. (The parking situation at the south Seattle Uwajimaya is a nightmare, though. No question about it.)
