Checking Out Houston’s Rich History Together

Understanding the history of the place you live can be an important thing. Learning about that history with someone special can be an experience that is both enlightening and fun. The next time you have an afternoon date, think about making your way to one of Houston’s interesting historic sites. Just a short trip to the east is the San JacintoMonument, a tribute to the battleground that saw Texas’ fight for independence come to a conclusion.

This year's Oscars theme is: Movie heroes

This year's Academy Awards ceremony will honor movie heroes. And yes, that includes superheroes and real-life film heroes as well. The 2014 Oscars producers made the big announcement earlier today, and I started thinking: Who are my favorite film heroes? I'm only a casual fan of superhero films, so I decided to come up with some of (what I believe) are the best real-life heroes portrayed on the big screen.

Revisiting Geoff Baker's Excellent Article

.

I've spent 12 years writing that --- > the Seattle Mariners' attempts to win a championship were severely handicapped by Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong.  Not primarily by Mike Hargrove, not by Bill Bavasi, not by all of the men in the carousel under them, but by Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong -- and the weird ownership power structure that has given them free reign to play George Steinbrenner.

For about the first 6 years of that, DOV/SSI was writing it alone.  Then Geoff Baker arrived, and slowly he started talking more and more about the absentee owner, and Lincoln, and Armstrong.  He gradually became less and less compromising about it, and now On Pearl Harbor Day he declares war.  I'm glad he did.  SSI is with him on it.

..........

The TIMING is frustrating.  We finally, at long last, have hit the point where the TV money, and Armstrong's retirement, and Lincoln's apparent desperation to salvage a legacy, have --- > the Mariners bringing in Robinson Cano, an ace pitcher, a cleanup hitter, two Michael Pinedas and a real chance to win.

After 12 years of wanting to talk about this, now I don't want to talk about it.  LOL.  But it ain't about me, and DOV/SSI owes you its updated analysis, based on all the latest data.  Hopefully this is the last front-page article on it for a while.

Let's do whatever maintenance we need, and get over to Gordon's column on aces.  Far more enjoyable :- )

.

I/O:  Terry McDermott and Mike Curto cosign Baker's column.  With gusto.

San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Park

For a short trip out of the city where you can see one of Texas’ most famous historic sites, take a journey to San JacintoBattlegroundStateHistoricPark.  It is situated on the spot where Texas fought and won its independence and though the monument is the main feature of the park there are plenty of other things to do here as well.  You can climb to the Ob

July 4th box office preview: The battle of animated movies?

Let's face it: July 4th is a holiday for getting outside. Most of us are perfectly content skipping the movie theater in favor of watching fireworks, stuffing our faces with excellent burgers and enjoying a cold beverage while floating in a pool/lake/river somewhere. However, once the family departs and the fireworks show is over, some of us do like to go see movies.

Want to watch some patriotic movies this July 4th?

Ah, the Fourth of July weekend is almost upon us. And while many of us will take to the beaches, lakes, parks and other wonderful outdoor locales to celebrate American independence with friends and family, some of us might get stuck with that buzz kill of all July 4th buzz kills: rain. Hey, it happens, and despite putting a damper on the big fireworks shows, it does offer up a chance to catch some nice holiday-themed movies.

Monday Medley: Gentle parenting

As peaceful parents, we strive to be as gentle and loving as possible with our children. Not only does yelling not work; it’s also a great way to give our kids horrible memories and to alienate them from us. That said, we all have our bad days. It’s important to apologize, forgive ourselves, and try to do better the next day. I have a big roundup of great articles about this with helpful tips today:
