I hate this move because of losing Carson Smith. We had a lot of work to do in the bullpen, now we have a lot more. Hopefully Zych can replace the loss of Smith. Hopefully building a wipe-out bullpen is as easy as some say. Our SP depth concerns me. Would feel better if we also got a reclamation guy with experience and a good bet to bounce back. Let's take a look at Cliff Lee and Doug Fister. I'm for an Adam Lind/Montero platoon, but that puts pressure on our utility guy to be able to play CF and SS well enough to not hurt us. Does O'Malley fit the bill? -didycell

rick82, are you suggesting that letting Iwakuma go and swapping out Elias for Miley is somehow stuffing the rotation?

If in fact DiPot was stuffing the rotation, then I could see that as one way of doing things and having it work out just fine. In fact, we have lost a solid #3 (Kuma) and a #5 (Elias) while gaining a perhaps #3 (Karns) and a solid #4 (Miley).

In other words, we've treaded water at best. Same now for the bullpen, we signed Benoit, traded away Carson Smith.

This is no way to build a pennant-winning rotation and bullpen. DiPot had better have some serious magic dust to sprinkle over it all to make it somehow be a recipe for success.

I liked DiPoto's early moves. I really did.

But we might just look back at today as The Day We Realized Jerry DiPoto Was Not The Answer.

Reply - OBF - 12/7/15 3:50pm

Of course... we could be looking back on this day as the day the Mariners run of dominance started... As we walk in the 2016 World Series parade this day may be what kicked it off :) :) :)

Stuff the rotation, and the bullpen will take care of itself. How? Well, the Royals put Duffy and Wade Davis in their pen, because they couldn't pitch 200 innings in the bigs. Carson is dominant, but so is Wade Davis: mediocre starter throw in. A very sizable percentage of bullpen specialists are failed starters. Betances and Miller for #New_York - former and failed starters. Hultzen - failed starter.

Elias/Miley swap doesn't bug me. Loses Carson irritates the crap outta me. Bullpen is key to outperforming pythag. JeDi says he can outperform using team defense. I...need to be sold on that.

Right... and Miley now being a Mariner means he tears his rotator cuff skiing over the Christmas holidays... the weekend after this deal is finalized with the league office of course... ;)

And we are cursed...CURSED with Mariner fandom. : )

I would not put them at even odds. Miley has a track record of performance. That means something.

What are the odds that Elias being a better starter Miley NEXT YEAR?? I would put them at even odds... sigh... Why am I a Mariner fan again???

If any one of those three things do not happen, M's lose.
