yes Jokestar, that is one of the arguments against putting a Nate Karns in the bullpen. Point cheerfully conceded. His pitching warmups aren't as "smooth" and predictable. Hopefully it winds up cutting down his actual workload, though, which could counterbalance?

TR inadvertently posted that under "ALL" rather than under the #Baseball subdomain. It really is a cool read. A data-rich #Environment.

Guys... don't miss TacomaRain's awesome article here: http://www.seattlesp... For some reason it fell out of the article carousel above even though it was only posted a day or two ago...

Here's his first MLB homer: https://www.youtube....
And some arm: https://www.youtube....

Darrell Ceciliani was designated today off the Mets 40-Man, due to the Cespedes signing. The kid is a bit interesting in that he's got a bit of a hitting #History and he's shown a CF glove. Our 40-Man is full so we would have to designate someone were we to be interested, but guys like this are always intriguing. Oh, he has options left.

Not necessarily, jokestar. The manager has to be savvy enough not to attempt a hot start for a starter-reliever guy...he has to get him up early and not call him in until he's ready. And there's no guarantee that Nuno will even make the team.

The problem I have with moving the extra starter to the bullpen is the change in the warmup routine. These guys have a routine that they follow every time they are scheduled to pitch. Moving them to the bullpen disrupts that routine. Not only is their warmup routine different, but the frequency that they'll be called on to pitch is noticably different. Also, we kind of have that emergency starter already in the pen in Nuno. jokestar

Besides which...I'd rather the non-rotation guy be in the big leagues and easy to stretch out when we need an emergency starter...make him a three-inning reliever, so that he can go five when we need to change the rotation outlook...

That's a no-brainer, Doc...glad to hear that they're considering it...the pen needs live arms...and absolutely any one of those three guys would become death on a stick out of the pen.

DiPoto volunteers the possibility that the Taijuan-Karns-KPax loser could pitch out of the bullpen (per Drayer). It's counter to current #Baseball fashion ("the kid needs reps") and back-channel arb time manipulation, but Dr. D would love love love it. Earl Weaver development strategy aside, it would make the ball club a better one.

Meh - we probably can't win a bidding war with #Houston or #Pittsburgh, both because of need and financial ability.

BUT - I'm sure a lot of folks would be happy to see Lee's production in the same role Montero projects to be in. I am looking forward to seeing if new management can help make Montero click with a semi-defined role, but there's a major question mark there, no doubt. #Pittsburgh has shown the willingness to put less-than-stellar D at 1B in favor of a bat (Alvarez), so maybe a deal can be made - #Seattle signs Lee, trades Montero for a mid-minor OF (Barrett Barnes?) or cash to offset Lee. I'd support that

Some gentle chatter about Korean/NPB first baseman Dae-Ho Lee - MLBTR mentions #Seattle as a possible fit if Lee were willing to platoon with Lind and also pick up at bats at DH when Cruz was in the OF...or something like that.

Thoughts?

Is baseballamerica's website down for everyone else? Or am I just special? I am seeing a 504 Server Error.

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/28/16 5:44am

Have not seen the site, what am I missing. Going to have to check it out

I wanted Rendon.

Nice of Dipoto to cover for JackZ as well... IIRC Danny was NOT a consensus pick at the time and picking him DID surprise some folks, including our own G_Money. Unlike Ackley who was a no brainer 30/30 teams take him, type of deal...

More MLBTR: This year in Spring Training, Mariners pitcher and 2011 No. 2 overall draft pick Danny Hultzen will make the transition to pitching in relief, Ryan Divish notes for #Baseball America (subscription only). It’s been a long fall for Hultzen, who was outrighted in November after his career was derailed by shoulder issues. Hultzen has pitched only 43 2/3 innings in the last three seasons. “Anybody in the league is making that same pick,” says GM Jerry Dipoto, who wasn’t in the organization when the Mariners selected Hultzen. “It’s unfortunate that it has worked out the way it has. But as I said to Danny on the phone when I told him we were removing him from the roster—I want to see him pitch in the big leagues.”

Sanchez was .746 vL in '14, but has a career .863 vs. southpaws. He was pretty putrid in #Japan last year, but this is cheap spaghetti that might pay off. I like the signing.

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/28/16 5:48am

Yea. Specifically like the numbers vs lefties.. Will be atkestbuseful for bench depth and pinch hits if nothing else

Mariners sign Gaby Sanchez to a minor league contract with a ST invite...he'll push Jesus Montero for the RH platoon bat roster spot.

Without a doubt OBF ... especially since Benoit is the lone sinker on this bullpen fishing line...

Reply - anonymous - 1/21/16 1:03pm

I am very dubious of Chaz until he proves he can still throw a 90 mph fastball.

Padres sign F-Rod, his tight rope, and his arrow... Good luck to him. Albeit they got him cheaper than we got Benoit for, but we essentially traded FRod and cash for Benoit... I'd take that everyday and twice on sunday!

From MLBTR, teams all over the game are adding outfielders that do NOT suck monkey nuts. The Mariners are not.

Reply - Browns8625 - 1/28/16 5:50am

I thought some of depth was added to better cover the outfield. So far Dipoto seems to be doing what he said he sought out to do

From MLBTR: Mariners catcher Jesus #Sucre suffered a fractured fibula this weekend playing in the Venezuelan Winter League, the Mariners confirmed to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma #News Tribune.

Y'know, it's times like these when I think that we should all seriously make an effort to (a) meet each other when circumstances allow (tough for me as I live nowhere near any of you. :( ), (b) make arrangements for someone we know to inform this community if the worst happens to us, so that all in the community can offer support and properly mourn (uncertainty is the worst...and it may be silly, but I think of this group as like a kooky extended family...I'm the black sheep punk that everyone barely tolerates, but it's better than no extended family at all...LOL) and (c) really take the time to treasure and appreciate this rare corner of the internet that has not been reduced to 140 character troll attacks and anonymous snark.

I'm late to the discussion DaddyO but prayers sent out for your continued recovery and good #Health for years to come! Love the 3-for-3 in saves Moe :) Keep us posted on how you're feeling and enjoy your family time despite the crummy circumstances. We've got a lot to be excited about with spring training really getting going in about 6 weeks, you should be good to go by then!

Hey DaddyO...can they do any surgery to determine where the rogue cells are and nuke them so they stop misfiring?

Reply - DaddyO - 1/18/16 8:00pm

No idea. Tomorrow I need to make a followup appointment with my cardiologist. Interesting idea, though. Still, it could be that the rogue-ness of cells is not a static consideration. I'll have to find out. I'm so tired right now that anything that complicated is beyond me. I'm operating on very low blood pressure now, since the new medication takes my already low BP and reduces it further. They're kinda walking a tightrope I think.

I replied below to those of you who have posted Shouts to me in the last few days. Thanks to all. I hope to put together an article on my experience.

at <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-value-of-deferred-money-in-the-chris-... target="_parent">http://www.fangraphs... it occurs to FG that $161M in deferred money is equal to $126M in current payout ... the 'advanced accounting approach' of Net Present Value is available as a formula in Excel ... :- )

Reply - Silentpadna - 1/20/16 9:26am

How about discounting future WAR? Do you suppose they've figured out how to value that? What about sunk cost? As I recall they don't really teach that stuff in standard math classes - maybe they do now, but it would be dangerous to the elites if the rabble figure out how bad they get ripped off on everything....
