More Oscar predictions: Can we expect a surprise win in the Best Actress category?

With the 85th Academy Awards literally a week away, I am once again considering some possible outcomes. I've already shared my thoughts on what may happen with Best Picture, but I thought it high time to discuss the major acting category that interests me the most this year: Best Actress.

Netflix has a big hit with 'House of Cards'

Last night, I decided to dive into Netflix's latest original series, House of Cards. I wasn't disappointed, and I knew I wouldn't be: Kevin Spacey is brilliant in everything. It's a heavy show, packed with tons of political drama and first-rate acting by Spacey, Kate Mara and Robin Wright, among others. If you enjoy a show about the nastiness and backbiting that is politics in America, I'd highly recommend checking House of Cards out.

What books would make great TV shows?

Recently, I read an interesting piece that listed several great novels that could possibly become hit television shows. My initial reaction to whether an awesome book could go on to be an awesome TV show was a resounding "no." Then I stopped to consider things. It's happened before, after all. Some really solid television shows came from books and in some cases, the shows were actually better.

Oscar Prediction: Which film will win the Best Picture Academy Award?

With just weeks to go now until the 85th Annual Academy Awards, I'm finally beginning to get a clear picture of the film I believe will win the coveted Best Picture Oscar. Trust me when I say I've agonized over my personal choices, because honestly, 2012 was a great year for film in general. Each of the Best Picture nominees is an outstanding cinematic achievement. But I'm putting my personal feelings aside now, and trying to look at the cold hard facts on this one.

Geek culture ascending

It’s no secret that the popularity of what some consider to be “geek culture” is on the rise. Comic books, video games, cosplay, computers and a host of other activities that used to get you picked on in the school yard have risen to become the norm these days.  More so, they’ve gained a level of prestige that I personally, being the one who used to hide his love of comic books and role-playing games, have found astounding.

How personal do you get on a first date?

Having been out of the dating world for quite some time, I have no idea how personal one might get on a first date—nor what is considered to be an acceptable amount of personal information to divulge. Is it as Penelope’s mother says—no mole unveiling until after the wedding? Or is it better to get it all out there and hope for the best?

A's 3 ..... (and batter #28)

Room 1408 is a psychological horror film, based on the book of the same name by Stephen King.  Batter #28 is a psychological torture implement, designed ingeniously by Craig Wright, Jay-Z, and Sgt. Wedge to break the heart and mind of Dr. Detecto.

=== And Take That With You ===

I thought that Blake Beavan actually executed his pitches better on Sunday than he did when he locked down the Rangers.  Fastball after fastball hit the batter's cold zone, he threw 67 of 98 strikes, his overhand curve bit hard, and he handed the ball to the setup man.

Oddly, the A's did not react to his fastball as though it were "long."  Beavan got only 2 swinging strikes all day -- though he got 4 strikeouts.  Why not?  Couldn't tell you.  Maybe the A's got a real good scouting report and game plan together.  If so, it didn't help them much.  They had 6 hits in 7 innings ... and three of those were parachute jobs.

The dude's sitting on a 7:1 command ratio -- last year his walks were 1+ and now guess what?  His walks are 0+.  Bob Tewksbury.  No walks, no homers, let's see you string four hits to get anything decent on me.

He's 13-and-5 vs the Quality Start stat, lifetime.  Teams that get QS win 67% of the time.
