Mixed feelings: ‘Weird Science’ and ‘Vacation’ remakes

Those of you alive back in 1985, or those that just like to go back and watch old films, may know of a little film by a director named John Hughes called Weird Science.  To those of us who were of an age to sit in the theaters and see this first-hand, it was a great bit of sci-fi inspired comedy that featured that always acceptable premise - two nerds getting a hot girl.  In this case, however, the two nerds made the girl out of nothing, using the super-powered science of the all-powerful “computer.”

David Mamet's disruptive deal with ICM Partners

It's happening.

Large publishers who represent big name talent are starting to allow and even support authors in their ranks to self-publish work. I see this as the next step down the road to authors taking more control of their work and traditional publishers moving toward more supportive service offerings like top notch editing, cover design and distribution.

Series Review: X-Men

The X-Men comic books were one of the many geek staples of my childhood.  Though many cartoons came and went through the decades, it was a long time after I was a kid that any of them seemed even close to capturing the wonder I felt at the original printed stories.  As far as movies went, the idea of making an X-Men movie was never at the forefront of Hollywood’s “to-do” list.  Until the year 2000 that is, when Bryan Singer’s first attempt at bringing these iconic super heroes to life finally hit the big screen.

Taking a spin at the BMW Munich Driving Academy

Right there on the car showroom floor, a stunning, young woman answered my request to slip into the seat of the latest Tesla for just a moment with, “Oh! You’re a car girl!” At first it was hard to admit, but it must have been true. There I was, on my birthday, pulling my partner and teenage son through the San Diego International Car Show to see the latest four wheel temptations, European luxury coupes, vintage cruisers, Hollywood stunt mobiles and gleaming sports cars and I loved every minute.

'Arrested Development' fans: Get the popcorn ready for Memorial Day weekend

I'll confess that it's been far too long since I sat down and watched the three gloriously funny, quirky, wonderful seasons of Arrested Development. Yes, I have the DVDs and yes, the show is streaming on Netflix, but I've spent the past month finishing up Alias (more on that at some point in the future). Even at a mere 21 minutes each, I just haven't found the right time to refresh my Arrested Development memory.
