What's happening after the summer blockbusters?

I'll now freely admit that I, like many movie goers, am suffering from a bit of blockbuster fatigue. I've spent months now racing to the theaters to see the latest and greatest, not just because I review these films but also because I just love to go. Now, however, I find myself unable to see even the blockbusters I have a casual interest in (The Wolverine, Pacific Rim) because....well, just because. I'm tired. I have great summer books to read. I like to sit outside and grill steaks and drink cold beer and look at my gorgeous backyard.

What movie took the top spot at the weekend box office?

Executives at 20th Century Fox are thanking their lucky stars for the huge overseas demand to see The Wolverine. Why? Because honestly, the film didn't perform all that well in the U.S. It did come on strong elsewhere, in fact, it did better than any other X-Men film ever has on a worldwide scale.

Series Review: Pirates of the Caribbean

Normally, when one hears of something like a movie being made based off of something like an amusement park ride, it’s time to run to the hills and hide, for Hollywood has struck again with its need to exploit anything and everything.  Thus, when I first heard that Disney was trying to turn Pirates of the Caribbean into a motion picture, I was more than a bit skeptical.  As it turns out, the presence of a fun script, an even funner Johnny Depp and the action-directing skills of Gore Verbinski came together to make what is one of the most entertaining pirate films every created.  As the movie expanded and became a franchise, however, it was quickly proven that not everything can last forever.  What began as clever became predictable and even Depp’s iconic character of Jack Sparrow began to grow tiresome.  What follows is an examination of the four-film series and why the pirate ship began to sink.

Media Hijinks - SDCC, Reboots and Cool Video Games

Well, the almighty San Diego Comic Con is finally over and… well, not much came out of it in my opinion.  There was one bit of amazing news, however.  It looks like Man of Steel is getting a sequel.  Wait a minute… that’s not news at all.  But what is new about the coming sequel is the announcement that it will feature Batman!  It’s going to be a Batman vs. Superman story based loosely off of Frank Miller’s critically acclaimed The Dark Knight Returns.  Who will they get to play the new Batman?  That little bit of information is still to be determined, but with a 2015 summer release date set (competing with Avengers 2, no less), they’ll be casting ASAP.

Weekend movie preview: Will 'The Wolverine' sink or soar?

Hollywood must be holding its collective breath right now, because at long last, one of the most anticipated blockbuster movies of the summer is finally coming out. James Mangold's The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman in the role that made him a bona fide superstar, is the only major weekend movie release. In a summer that has seen a lot of mega-films tank very quickly, and very badly, can The Wolverine buck the trend?

Is 'The Conjuring' really that scary?

Well, I did it: I survived seeing The Conjuring. Trust me when I tell you this was a pivotal moment in my movie going life. I was too young, thankfully, to see The Exorcist in theaters when it was released in 1973. More on that later, but I had zero excuses left to not see The Conjuring with my beloved earlier today. As I sat through the trailers leading up to the feature film, I was thinking, "There's just no way this movie's really going to be *that* scary."

Guess which movie won the weekend box office?

Surprise, surprise: Another big-budget Hollywood blockbuster is on life support after a disappointing weekend debut. I'm talking about R.I.P.D., the action/comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as two undead police officers. I can't say this is shocking. The trailers seemed pretty lame to me, and there's just way too much decent competition in theaters right now.

Media Hijinks - Another Week of Bad Movies

While the majority of this week’s news is about Hollywood going bad and feeding us reboots that we don’t really need, at least there’s a bit of good news to wash the bad taste from our mouths.  I’ll start with the good news, so you can feel free to run away if need be.  Oh, and that picture above - that’s what George R.R. Martin wanted the iron throne to look like.  So awesome.

Weekend movie preview: Robots battling monsters battling grown ups

Well, here we are: It's finally Friday, and guess what that means? Yes, it's time for the latest installment in What's In Theaters This Weekend and I've got to say, anyone who can't find at least one film currently playing to see well, you'll never be happy with anything. Ever. Seriously we've got action movies with robots and monsters, an Adam Sandler sequel (more on that in a minute), two solid animated family films and a few decent comedies, too. See my point?
