What’s Happening Wednesday: Link between child asthma, BPA

Stories like this one make me shake my head when people say things like, “Well, my parents did it and it was good enough for me!” This is usually in regards to watching television or “crying it out” or even spanking. The same thing was said about parents who let kids sleep on their stomach before we knew about SIDS, or parents who let their kids go to bed with a bottle before we learned about tooth decay.

The Cleveland Show, "Who Done Did It?"

It seems like American Dad has been faltering in recent seasons, leaving The Cleveland Show to take the title of "Best Seth MacFarlane Show." But this was resoundingly not the case last night, with a mystery-based episode that was nothing but weak sauce. As if aware of this fact, FOX shunted the episode to the final slot of the night, putting a re-run in the show's usual time slot.

Spiders ensnare and hunt bats: The stuff nightmares are made of

As if spiders weren't scary enough, I have just found out that some of them are large enough to ensnare and feed on bats. Folks, this is the stuff nightmares are made of – at least my nightmares. A scientific paper in PLOS ONE reports that more than 50 incidences of bat predation by spiders have been recorded on every continent except Antarctica. Sometimes the bats got tangled up in the webs and died of reasons like starvation and exhaustion.

Parents beware: Snapchat app is a predator's dream

Most parents know that we need to monitor our children when they're on computers. If you don't also monitor your child's cellphone, you may want to start. Traditional social media apps aren't your only concern. Smartphone apps are making it easier than ever for your child to connect with complete strangers. One that you'll want to keep an eye out for is Snapchat. The app is a predator's dream and a parent's worst nightmare.

Planning for your target market readers

I often ask self-publishers who they think would like their book. Some people have a very clear idea of who would probably pick up their book, but a lot of authors I talk to haven't really thought about it. And their answer is something along the lines of, "Everyone."

Everyone in the world is not your target market. Everyone in the United States is not your target market.

DOMA in the Supreme Court: For or against?

One of the biggest events in the news these days and perhaps one of the biggest historical occurrences of this decade, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is finally having its day in the Supreme Court.  The title of this act is dubious at best, for it does little to defend marriage as a whole and really only exists in order to “defend” the antiquated view of marriage as it has been perceived during our country’s primarily Christian-driven history.  As of Wednesday, March 27, 2013, DOMA is being put to the vote.
