North Korea flexes its muscles yet again

It seems that the North Korean military can not go a week without doing something to piss their neighbors off.  Last week, I talked a little about their use of an American prisoner as a bargaining chip (a tactic they employ on a regular basis).  This week, it’s yet another missile launch, albeit a smaller and more reliable one than the disasters they've had lately.

Five beautiful cemeteries across the world

The purpose of a vacation is usually to get away from the mundane of the day-to-day and enjoy your life, but sometimes the most enjoyable things can be found in the beauty of death.  I’m not talking about dropping dead, of course.  What I am speaking of are the many cemeteries across the world that are, due to humanity’s desire to explain the end of our lives, collections of art.  Many people don’t feel comfortable in the places of the dead, but you might be surprised as what treasures await.  Since the beginning of time memorials have been made to express that mix of the beauty of a person

The varied approach to North Korea

Over the last months, it appeared as if the majority of Asian countries were finally coming into sync where it concerns the North Korean situation.  The DPRK’s continued aggression and the development of their nuclear program managed to irk pretty much everyone at once.  Even China looked like they would be joining in with the U.S. and South Korea and imposing sanctions against the rogue state.  But recent developments have shown the bare-faced truth of politics: That first-and-foremost, every

Rauuuuuuul, Dept.

After "HR - Ibanez 2 (6)" in the Bronx on Wednesday, he went on ESPN's Quick Pitch and praised his teammates highly.  "We've got a bunch of gamers and fighters, and we're enjoying playing together," he sez.

Granted, Rauuul has always been an org guy, a leader in this respect.  But his statement is also accurate.  The Mariners do have gamers now.  Kyle Seager is a "gamer."  Obviously Rauuul is.  You can name your own list, and it isn't a short one.

The average fan, like you and me, probably has no way to comprehend what it's like going from AAA to ... well, to being on ESPN, to walking out into triple-deck stadiums, to playing in front of 12 slo-mo TV's, to going up against all of the computers and scouting reports that tear a player's strike zone limb-from-limb.

It's got to be another thing entirely, to go into the city of New York and play in Yankee Stadium.

Six immersive events for geeks (and their families)

Many of us are proud to say that we’re geek to the core.  Video games, role-playing games, super hero movies, comic books and other unique interests have defined the way that we grew up and turned us into the people we are today. And while some may “grow up” and leave their geek behind, others of us hold onto our love until the day we bite the dust.

The strange face of Chinese diplomacy

Being that China seems to always be at odds with their neighbors, particularly when it comes to territory disputes, it is a strange thing when you hear about them trying their hands at creating peace in the world.  In their latest attempt to come across as good peace-keepers, the government of China has stepped into the middle of the Israel-Palestine conflict.  And though the end result may prove to be far less than one could hope, it does have the definitive effect of the country announcing itself as a player in the Middle East

South Korean Toilet Theme Park

If there’s one thing that South Korea seems to give Japan a run for its money on, it’s the creation of some truly interesting tourist attractions.  The latest is certainly no exception, as the city of Suwon, just south of the country’s capital, is host to a toilet theme park.  It is an attraction devoted to all things toilet, put together and opened recently.  It also happens to be the only such theme park in the entire world - go figure.

What is the concept?

The picture above all but sums up the concept of my first novel: A work of historical fiction that depicts the Doolittle Raid of WWII in a manner best described as Thirty Seconds over Tokyo meets "Band of Brothers." The way Jimmy Doolittle and his men (along with USS Hornet captain Marc Mitscher) are posing in the shot is especially evocative of promotional pics of the cast of "Band" like the one pi

The Magnificent Seven

I was gonna do a series of posts about the upper and lower minors, but Spec is killin' it on MarinersTalk w/r/t that, so I figured I'd do something a little more free-form.  Just the guys who've caught my eye early.  It wasn't too long ago that we were looking for the Three Little Pigs down on the farm, some bacon with ANY sort of sizzle.  We have a lot more sizzle now.
