Unusual Crafts: Blythe dolls

I am always fascinated by the intersection of fandom and craft, and Blythe dolls sit perfectly on that line. And they draw my attention even more, because I have never been even the slightest bit interested in playing with dolls. Not now, and not as a child. This means that I find it fascinating to see people spending so much time on their Blythe dolls, and the meticulous care they use to construct their scenes.

Unschooling, homeschooling & hackademic movies

UnCollege just published a list of six great movies for hackademics—well, some of them are great; I haven’t seen them all—and I couldn’t help but notice it’s a very male-centric list. Most movie lists are, unfortunately; women’s stories, other than love/sidekick/token tales, aren’t portrayed as often in film as men’s. I also noticed that it’s a very white-centric list, too. That said, I wondered if we could come up with a great diverse list of such movies about unschooling, homeschooling and alternative learning.

What's the deal with flower crowns?

I'm usually pretty good at deconstructing and parsing memes, but this one has got me stumped. I even checked Know Your Meme but they had no entries on the relatively new phenomenon of flower crowns.

What is a flower crown? Depends on the context. In context #1, it's a literal crown of flowers that people literally wear to look pretty. In context #2 it's something you add to a photo of your favorite male fandom crush. And I cannot figure out why.

Weekend reading pile

It is absolutely gorgeous outside where we live near St. Louis. We’ve been to the drive-in, to a barbecue and otherwise outside throughout the week and it’s been so lovely. Last year at this time it was record-breaking hot, so we are very grateful! If you need some weekend reading, however, here are some topics I ran across…

The World’s Oddest Museums

Normally, when one visits a museum, one expects to see things like great works of art or a collection of things from the past all gathered in one place.  There are plenty of museums out there that cater to this more standard of needs.  But what about those of us that are looking to get a break from gazing at Picassos or reconstructed sets of dinosaur bones?  For the museum tourist with stranger tastes, there plenty of places out there that are dedicated to both enlightening and being different.  Today, I’ve gathered up seven examples of some of the oddest museums in the world, though there are plenty more out there if you look for them.

Is reading really "sexy"?

There was quite a kerfluffle this week over the issue of the "Reading is Sexy" meme, and all its various Pinterest-shared corollaries. I agree that these bumper stickers and image macros have their heart in the right place. There is a real tide of anti-intellectualism in this country, and I applaud all readers who are willing to publicly push back against that cultural force.

El Bosc de les Fades

Some places are just so unique that one should not miss the opportunity to see them if it arises.  One of these places happens to be in one of the greatest tourist spots in Spain, the city of Barcelona.  It’s called El Bosc de les Fades (the forest of the fairies), and though it’s not a full restaurant, it is a nice little café and bar (that serves some food) with a truly amazing atmosphere.
