New trailer alert: Wes Anderson's 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'

Just a couple of days ago the world was buzzing about the first official poster for Wes Anderson's next movie, 2014's The Grand Budapest Hotel. I, for one, felt lucky to get just a great poster so early in the game. Now, it seems Fox Searchlight is taking things to a whole new level, because we now have the first official trailer too! This is like Wes Anderson Christmas morning for me.

Judgment Time: Originals vs. Remakes - Round 2

Welcome to round 2 of me vs. people that want to remake movies.  This time around I will attack three new subjects, some of which excelled and others that did not do so well.  It is the curse of the remake that it should always be judged as inferior to the original, but there are times (as much as I hate to admit it) where a redo on an old film actually brings the subject to life.  Usually this has to do with new special effects to make something look prettier, but sometimes there is such a great person behind the remake that it actually holds water.  And the opposite holds true as well, unfortunately.  For even new special effects can not always save a film from being complete crap.  Read on and enjoy.

The Trouble with Movies - Part I

This week, instead of reviewing a movie I decided to address an issue that is very important to me - the things that Hollywood movies keep doing that are just ridiculous and annoying.  And though there are many of these things, I have chosen three to keep it simple.  Read on and learn how, in my opinion, movies could be made so much better if Hollywood directors just abandoned some antiquated principles that, when used today, do nothing other than make the movie look amateur.

Media Hijinks - Sequels, Sequels, Sequels!

Welcome back to another installment of Media Hijinks, where I, your slightly tipsy writer, will attempt to enlighten you on some of the major developments in the world of movies, television and other stuff that we associate with Hollywood.  This time around, a ton more sequels are planned (as usual) and Jennifer Lawrence makes a great statement about Hollywood and the way it treats women.  Scroll down for the not-so-action-packed fun.

The Three Clubs

Right in the heart of Hollywood is a hip cocktail lounge known as The Three Clubs.  Originally a place for the highbrow crowd to frequent, it has since become a hotspot for live music, talented DJs and even the occasional burlesque show.  If you’re looking for a fun night out with some great entertainment, The Three Clubs is the way to go.  It still looks the part of an old martini bar, but rest assured you’ll find this to be a happening place with reasonably priced drinks and people that are there to relax and have fun.  Has anyone been

The Foxfire Room

Located in North Hollywood, The Foxfire Room is a great little neighborhood dive bar for those looking to avoid the typical Hollywood glitz and glamour while they drink.  The bartenders are your usual dive bar sort, serving up strong drinks for cheap prices.  The customers tend to be more locals than visitors and older rather than younger, but the atmosphere is friendly and inviting and they even have karaoke twice a week.  For a more mature setting, The Foxfire Room is an excellent choice and may be a good place to meet so

Which film got a standing ovation at the New York Film Festival?

Make no mistake: Oscar awards season is in full swing. So many excellent films are slated to come out in the next few weeks and months, it's almost dizzying. I love covering summer blockbusters, but I must confess: I love my Academy Award-caliber movies just as much (if not more). With that in mind, I am still trying to keep track of all the latest and greatest movies, and I'm throwing this one out as a strong contender right now: Captain Phillips.
