Fun September crafts

Yesterday was in the 80s, but before that we had a couple of really fall-ish days of weather that are wrecking havoc on my allergies—and making my heart leap with anticipation at the same time. I just love the fall! I used to love the spring in Missouri, too, but lately our springs are so brief that there’s barely a season to enjoy before summer takes over.

Go guilt-free

Sometimes we have rotten days as parents. These are the days when you wake up bleary-eyed from little sleep if any, or sick, or you just have a funky mood you can’t kick. You might snap at people, or leave half of your to-do list unfinished, or just wish for a chocolate fairy to come and bless you. Whatever happens, parents often feel guilty about it afterwards.

Tasty Tidbits: Pumpkin pie ice cream

The fall is quickly approaching, and what better way to celebrate than prepare pumpkin everything? My family always makes pumpkin bread—save for the year with the pumpkin shortages—and pumpkin pie, but this pumpkin pie ice cream is a cool idea that we haven’t tried yet. If you have some pie filling and some oatmeal cookies, you are already halfway there.

Quitting Facebook

I’ve left Facebook a few times out of frustration from the social networking monster. The changes in privacy, the double standards and sexism, and the soul-sucking nature of the beast were all prime reasons why, and every time I leave it gets easier to leave. The hard part, of course, is staying away. The three people I know who aren’t on Facebook are also the happiest I know, so I decided to give it another shot.

The Resort on Mount Charleston

For couples that just need to get away from the constant Las Vegas heat for a while, consider taking a trip about an hour northwest of the city and visiting The Resort on MountCharleston.  This resort is nestled in the mountains and high above the desert floor, meaning the weather is a bit more tolerable.  Enjoy hiking across the region’s more than 50 miles of trails.  Take a night out and camp along the way.  Or just enj

Did you hear that Netflix has made so many changes that they are offering free trials to old members again? The offer is valid through October, so my family is definitely going to take them up on it.

All about: Corn

This week in the "All About" series, let's talk about corn! Corn is a classic late-summer treat here in the states. Even in the Pacific Northwest where I live, fresh locally grown corn is a highly prized summer item. This year the corn harvest clocked in a little later than usual, so our local corn is only just now starting to hit the market. In most areas, August is the peak of corn season - just in time for prime picnic weather.

Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area

Can you imagine random cattle meandering along your airport? Those days are long gone now at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area. Now there are fields for you and your boyfriend or girlfriend to play baseball and soccer at with other Hawaiian singles. There’s also a day use boat mooring you can use, as well as a place where you can go snorkeling and diving. Don’t use the water during adverse weather conditions, however, as it is rocky and dangerous. Have you ever visited Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area with Honolulu singles or a date? How did you like it there?

Yosemite fire still burning out of control

The Yosemite Rim fire is still burning, with over 4,000 firefighters dispatched to fight the fire. Recent reports are that the blaze is now 20 percent contained (up from 7 percent yesterday) but this one is going to take a while to rein in. It's currently one of the 20 largest fires in California history, so big that it has its own weather system. And it could be a sign of things to come.

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park

When the weather’s warm and the rain is steady but not flooding creeks and rivers, Missouri singles head to Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park for some river fun in the sun. The East Forest Black River runs over hard rocks that create rivulets of natural pools to play in, creating an effect that is both fun and beautiful. There’s also camping, an observation deck, hiking, and other activities to do at the park. Take your date there for some truly memorable couple time and he or she is sure to love it. Have you ever enjoyed the water at Johnson’s Shut Ins? Share your photos and stories here.
