Spend a Date Exploring LA’s Amazing Film Festivals

With Hollywood lurking at the heart of Los Angeles, it’s no wonder that there are so many film festivals in the area. For couples that enjoy partaking of new and unusual film from around the world, there are few better places to find as much variety. If your date is a film aficionado, consider a film festival as an alternative to the usual dinner and a movie routine.

Media Hijinks - Big Trailers and Big Mistakes

First up this week, a look at what we can expect from the barrage of Super Bowl ads this year. This major sporting event is known for bringing some of the biggest and the best advertisements and with the summer blockbuster season on the horizon it only makes sense that movie studios would be seeking to take advantage of the exposure. This year, we’ll be getting a glimpse of the very first Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer, which will show us exactly how bad MichaelBay got it this time around. We’ll also get another look at both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2. Rumors abound that X-Men: Days of Future Past and Expendables 3 will also be on the bill, though those remain unconfirmed. And naturally, even if you don’t watch the Super Bowl (like me), the trailers will likely be plastered all over the Internet before the game is even over.

2013 in female roles

Now that movies that include strong female leads are making the most money at the box office, I have high hopes that companies will strive to produce even more films that at the very least pass the Bechdel Test. But when I look at the lineup for this year, the children’s movies alone make me wince. I see token female feisties and not many other female characters in almost every movie.

Media Hijinks - Theme Parks, Adaptations and More Recycling

First up this week, good news for Harry Potter fans. It appears as if that Wizarding World expansion down at Universal Orlando is just about ready to go. Modeled after the much-loved Diagon Alley, visitors will get the chance to see more awesome scenery, ride more themed rides, shop for even more Harry Potter gifts and stuff their faces with Potter-esque food and drinks. So if you happen to be in Florida this summer, stop by and check it out. For more details one what to expect from the expansion, you can head to this site.

New and notable coming of age films: 'The Spectacular Now'

Over the weekend, I somehow managed to watch not one, but three John Hughes movies: The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink. And I finally realized just how much I truly love coming of age movies. Before you roll your eyes and say "Yes, but coming of age...the term just sounds so lame," allow me to explain. I came of age during the Hughes heyday. The teen movies of the 1980s are a great part of who I am as a movie lover. Watching Hughes' movies takes me back and makes me all nostalgic, even now, all these (many!) years later.

Which movie psychopaths are the most realistic?

A team of researchers watched 400 Hollywood movies about psychopaths and analyzed them to determine which was the most realistic. Spoiler alert: No Country for Old Men comes in at the top spot, whereas Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter did quite poorly. (They didn’t analyze the new NBC Hannibal, I’d have like to see what they thought.)

Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2013)

Why, oh why did I decide that it would be worth two-and-a-half hours of my life to watch the MichaelBay abortion known as Transformers: Dark of the Moon?  I mean, I didn’t like the first two flicks, so what possessed me?  Possession - yes, that must be the answer.  Some sort of demon must have ravaged my soul and forced me into submission.  As you can probably tell by now, my viewing experience wasn’t exactly the greatest.

Keeping Up With the Industry News

Most of the news out there that concerns the evolution and progress of the various media formats we all know and love is going to come to us via the power of news sites.  It’s simply easier for Internet journalists to get off the mark quickly when something breaks and they want to let the world know (and want to make a buck or two by being one of the first to break it).  But sometimes filtering through all that text can be a huge pain in the butt.  So we find ourselves scanning titles to see what the gist of the news is and then, perhaps, if we have a few extra seconds, giving a once-over on the articles themselves.  Heck, if it’s something we’re really interested in, we might even read the entire thing.  Luckily, the miracle of the Internet has made it easy for us to get caught up on geek-centric news without necessarily having to click through tons of print-based media sites.
